A special meeting accepted Leo Sears resignation from Kodiak City Council over disputed city limits on Mission Road. Sears cites tax payments and legal boundary issues, urging the public to back the new council and push for a naval base linked development plan including dock, harbor, and infrastructure upgrades.
Merrill Coon, the local Standard Oil agent, stated that prices of motor and aviation gasoline kerosene and Blaze rise 0.8 cents per gallon effective March 20 while diesel furnace and stove oil and automotive diesel gain 0.7 cents. A further 1 cent tax is added on automotive fuels. Gasoline now 27.5 cents a gallon. Fuel oil at 14.5 cents per gallon.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its auxiliary will hold a joint installation of officers at the VFW Club on April 1 at 8 pm. The public is invited to attend.
Jake La Follette, a local taxi driver, departed on a Denali vacation trip. R. E Krautter of Old Harbor returned on the Denali after a vacation in the United States.
The sewing group of the Kodiak Red Cross meets each Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm at the Community Center. Women may take garments home to sew if unable to work at the center. Mrs Alfred Owen is vice chairman and Mrs Robert von Scheele is production chairman for the war refugees sewing project.
The speaker urges that residents be property owners and capable enough to dedicate time to duties. He expresses confidence in voters to legally establish Mission district status by joining the city, notes ongoing tax payments, and calls for pooled resources and united action at the election. He thanks supporters and commits to good government.
Filings closed Monday with one candidate for mayor and one for the school board, six for three council seats. Incumbent Lee Bettinger runs unopposed for mayor after Central Labor Council filings. Leon Ole Johnson tops the school board. Labor Council also backed W J Wheeldon Norman Noble and Jack Hinekel for council. Eugene Erwin filed by petition. New petitions added for council members Olof H Olson and Ted Rozak. Stanley Nelson withdrew. One week to register for April 1 election. yesterday 183 registered versus 131 last year.
Mary Sorum was elected president of the Kodiak Business and Professional Women's Club at the annual meeting to succeed Lilian Morris. New officers include Peggy Sutliff as vice president Lillian Lamme recording secretary Mabel Fenner corresponding secretary and Bette De Young treasurer. A motion to protest the Saturday Evening Post Hangover Town article was voted down. Fleeta Christopherson led a spelling bee to select BPW’s Kodiak spelling bee team for April 29 with June Wilson Mary Sorum Ellen Dawson Marion Curtis and Jeanne Crawford named as the five top spellers.
The editors acknowledge that after preparing the editorial and removing ads, at least two ads were taken out without the advertisers' knowledge. They express regret that there was no feasibility to verify with the individuals involved.
Colonel T. J. Tully, commanding officer of the Alaska Communication system, announced tentative approval to allocate 2134 kilocycles for commercial boats with radiotelephone facilities to contact ACS coastal stations in Alaska. Permanent use requires formal FCC applications, with about three weeks for action after initial filings. ACS stations will monitor 2783 until 2134 is permanently approved.
Persons interested in attending a leather craft course are invited to register at the Community Center within the next week. The class, mainly for novices, will be led by Miss Margo Kiilsgaard and will determine session hours after the group forms. The fee is 150 dollars to cover tools and texts plus material costs per person.
Robert King returned on the Denali with his daughter Ariene who was taken outside for eye treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Metzgar arrived on the Denali after a vacation trip to Los Angeles.
The search for Mike Kerr and Ray Harmon expanded this week after no signs in the first week. Tommy Clampster leading the team reported no findings from Ahkiak Island to Katmai Bay. Kanatak residents memory places the men there in November and says they left briefly and never returned.
Mr Negreth formerly worked for Pat Lynch and is returning to employment with the transfer company after arriving with Mrs Negreth aboard the Denali.
Mrs Paul Herring and her daughter Arline returned home after spending part of the winter with relatives in Vancouver British Columbia.
Mrs. W J Wheeldon departed for Denali and will stop in the United States to visit relatives and seek specialized medical attention for a band infection.
One of the nation’s finest early American coin collections will be shown at the Kodiak Community Center tomorrow evening after 8 30 pm. Owner OC Saeman of the Seattle Coin Club will attend to discuss the coins and answer questions. Saeman, honored this week with a life membership plaque, will also display presidential medals. Admission is free and all are invited.
Nathan Taylor of Brewton Alabama joins the Bank of Kodiak as cashier. He brings banking experience from Brewton and Mobile and previously worked in the Bank of Alaska at Skagway in 1942. His wife and two children will join him at the end of the school term.
