Two Groups To Meet For Postwar Planning

A joint meeting of the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club is planned for next Monday at 7 30 p m in the Wayfarers club building opposite the Russian church. The agenda includes postwar planning and steps toward establishing a cold storage plant. All members of both groups are urged to attend.

Taxi drivers blame local board for tire shortages

A Juneau wired response from Mildred Hermann of the OPA explains Alaska tire and tube quotas are sharply reduced nationwide due to a low rubber stockpile. Kodiak’s monthly quota has dropped from over 30 tires to 4 for grade one tires since July, with local boards assessing eligibility not essentiality, urging taxi operators to curb nonessential travel to win the war.

Mainland Peak Erupts Near Chignik Alaska

George Mahle of Chignik reported the eruption of Yemaminoff mountain about 12 miles from Chignik. The volcano erupted the night of March 7 with fire and smoke lighting the area as ashes fell by March 9. He compared the ash intensity to five years ago when it darkened the sun near Veniaminoff.

Construction Head Chosen For Church

Paul Raumaker, a carpenter, was chosen superintendent of construction for the proposed new Russian church. He will supervise the project throughout its duration. Construction start date will depend on material availability.

Kodiak Bottling Works was entered through a window in the early yesterday morning. Missing were miscellaneous machine parts reported by staff.

Four Councilmen to be Elected with One-Year Term

Outgoing councilmen this year are James Pierce H A Pearson now absent on leave and W P Smith. The fourth councilmanic position to be filled is W F Lewis who resigned recently. Four councilmen will be voted on with the three high vote winners taking 2 year terms and the fourth taking a 1 year post. Hold over councilmen are L K Wodlinger and Ben Sholl. Of the present school board Charles Madsen chairman Mrs Louise Coon and Rev Gregory Morony only Mrs Coon remains. One of the two to be voted on will be for a 1 year term and one for a 3 year term.

Man Drowns After Night Search Near Erskine Dock

Bill Wasbrekoff of Karluk supposedly headed to a boat at Erskine's dock when he fell into the channel and disappeared before rescuers could reach him. The drowning occurred shortly before 5 am Tuesday while Nels Christianson, Fritz Lorentson, and Emil Norton aided in the peril. Despite drag efforts led by deputy US Marshal Paul Herring, the body has not been recovered. Wasbrekoff, once a dredge deckhand, had just married Sophie and is survived by his father Mike in Ouzinkie.

Mail Rates Going Up

Increased postage rates and higher fees for money or registered, insured and cop mail have been announced by the post office department. The new rates will be charged on and after March 26. Rates will be charged as follows: First Class Mail for Local Delivery excluding 1 cent per ounce or fraction and 3 cents for each ounce or fraction for post cards. Air Mail for inter mainland U S routes.
