Al Miller Buys Rockey's Cafe Cafe name to be Al's Slap Happy Cafe

Mr and Mrs Alvin Miller owners of the Montmartre Inn have purchased Rockey and Carries Cafe from Mr and Mrs Rockey Miller. The brothers plan to rename the cafe to Al's Slap Happy Cafe after a decade in Kodiak Island restaurant work.

Construction Men Get Increase

Washington wage board allows over three million construction workers to receive up to 224 cents more per hour in 1952, including health welfare benefits. The policy is permissive, letting employers grant all or part of the raise, after prior boosts capped at 10 percent.

The annual American Red Cross drive will begin in Kodiak the week of March 24 to 31. L. K. Wod linger, the local chairman, said yesterday. Mrs. Merrill Coon was chosen as roll call chairman.

Building moved off Alaska Way site by Island Construction

The former Kodiak Transit Co bus station building was relocated from the Kraft supermarket site by Island Construction Corp under John Chase. It was bought recently by Jorgen Fredrickson and then sold to Harold Simmons this week. Previously it served as a Margo Lester studio and housed the Frontier Shop. The structure was dragged to Island Construction Corp property.

Rogan Couple Nominated as Perryville Postmaster

Mrs Edward Rogan formerly Isabelle Goldthorpe is recommended for Perryville postmaster. The couple, former Kodiak Public School teachers, now teach for the Alaska Native Service at Perryville, about 60 miles west of Chignik, if the office is reestablished. Del E L Bartlett made the recommendation.

Remodeling Plans For PNA Office Displayed In City

Remodeling plans for converting the old Club Liquor Store into a ticket office and waiting room for Pacific Northern Airlines were shown at the building this week. Ray Martin, owner, said interior work would start soon. Martin has built a new adjoining building for his package liquor business and PNA will rent the completed space. Helen Rice is now employed at the PNA office and waiting room.

VA Dividends Mailed for National Service Life Insurance

The Veterans Administration will mail 1952 dividends to five million policy holders for National Service Life Insurance. About 200 million dollars will be distributed with individual payments typically around 60 dollars. Cash payments available only on request. otherwise funds may be left with the VA to cover future premiums or earn interest.

Ike, Sen Kefauver Win in New Hampshire

General Ike and Senator Kefauver swept the New Hampshire presidential primary winning all delegates. Eisenhower led Taft by about 46 000 votes in the Republican race and Kefauver captured all 12 Democratic delegates amid a 129 066 vote total. President Truman, vacationing in Key West, declined comment on the results.

A series of CAA supervisory personnel conferences took place this week on Woody Island as part of an Alaska wide management improvement program initiated by a presidential executive order.
