Deed Bill Signed for Alaska Native Townsite Land

President Truman signed a bill authorizing unrestricted deeds for townsite lands in Alaska held by Alaska natives. The deeds would be issued upon petition to the Secretary of the Interior or a designated representative, making the land saleable and taxable. The bill allows issuance of unrestricted deeds to natives via trustees holding patents for townsites surveyed under the 1891 act, with further text continued on page 4.

Kodiak Mirror Sold to Crawford Couple

Announcement states the Kodiak Mirror is sold by Mr and Mrs William H Lamme to Mr and Mrs Melton L Crawford. The deal includes the newspaper and job printing department and becomes effective April 1. Mrs Crawford has been city editor since December. Mr Crawford worked in Krafts hardware and formerly in Knudens management. The Lammes, who bought the paper Dec 5 1941 from Gene Dawson, plan a vacation to the States this summer before returning to Kodiak.

Missing Boy Found in Car in School Yard

Seven year old Michael Folsom was missing after leaving the Community Center at 7 pm. A multi hour search by his family, volunteers, and firemen found him at 5 am asleep in a car in the school yard. A bloodhound aided the search, tracing from bed clothes near the boy.

Successful Bidder Wins Gloves Hers

Mrs N M Chamberlain bought a pair of second hand gloves from herself at a Baptist Woman's Society white elephant auction to raise funds. Spirited bidding followed as she reclaimed the gloves and the sale of varied items netted $66.15. New officers to be installed April 8 include Mrs H N Wilkinson president and Mrs Harold Pratt vice president.

Denali Due Today With 340 Tons Of Freight

The steamship Denali is due about 5 pm today delivering 340 tons of freight to town. It recently left dry dock after a routine annual inspection and received a new fire sprinkler system and remodeling of steerage and galley areas.

Gruening Nominated by Truman for Second Term Governor

President Truman today nominated Governor Ernest Gruening for a four year term and sent the nomination to the Senate committee on territories and island affairs for consideration. The appointment must be confirmed by the Senate.

Lindgrens travel to Seattle for sister’s funeral

Mrs. Harry Lindgren and her daughter Toni left yesterday for Seattle to attend the funeral of Mrs. Lindgren’s sister who was killed in an automobile accident this week. They expect to stay about two months.

Man Learns School Grounds Run Fails By Frightened Searchers

A man pursuing a scent near a school ground abandoned the chase when the lights of searchers startled him, causing him to lose the trail and retreat.

Candidate List Grows in Kodiak Election Race

Lee C. Bettinger will seek another term as mayor with nominations from the Central Labor Council and the Progressive Party. For city council, Bill Worth, Karl Brunstad, and Tom Nachand were filed. Wilton White is the school board nominee, with a petition circulated for White. Kodiak businessmen endorsed Bettinger and named Pat Cannon, J. Norman, and John C. Hughes for council. White also the school board nominee. The Labor council cited Bettinger’s past accomplishments including the army dock purchase and water system terms. Ken Wade withdrew from the school bond race. About 75 residents have registered, says registrar Myrna Perkins.

Alaska plans a Boston style tea party on April 13 to protest territorial status and push Congress toward statehood. Governor Gruening may call a noon work stoppage and broad publicity while the Alaska Federation of Labor presses for action.

City Council Details Possible Expanded City Limits

The council disclosed that municipal incorporation documents show limits extending from Mission Road toward Spruce Street and a strip reaching Potato Patch Lake. A local patent omits these areas but legal opinion says they remain within the incorporated boundary and eligible for voter registration. A legal search of court records will determine final status with results due today.
