The price for red salmon jumped to $1.25 as cannery firms fight to secure boatloads. A price war followed a weak red run, with Chignik reported at $1 and the region’s commercial fishing area briefly closed last week. Kodiak boats rushed to the Cook Inlet as word spread.
Burl Clymer a 39 year old Kodiak pilot missing for five days in a flight from Port Williams to Chignik was found on Aniakchak Bay by a 10th Rescue B 17 at 6 06 pm Sunday He landed at Wide Bay when fog and bad weather closed in He was in good condition his Aeronea four place float plane undamaged A Coast Guard PBY delivered fuel and oil and he flew on to Chignik The B 17 dropped blankets and food He carried 50 loaves of bread and had no passengers He ate only bread for five days Weather delayed rescue planes for four days
Marvin J. Slaughter of the U S Coast and Geodetic Survey and six crew members were flown to Kodiak after weeks at Mush Bay installing government equipment for registering tides. The Bellanca of Kodiak Airways carried the party and its gear. Slaughter’s headquarters are in Palmer.
A town Independence Day schedule lists a parade forming at Kraft's Store and ending at the school grounds with flag ceremonies and an Independence day address. Activities include children's races on Marine Way, a Junior Marathon, a naval station marathon start, pie and beer contests, horse racing, outboard boat races near D and A dock, and dancing at Legion Hall. Motorists are advised to watch for marathon runners between 12:30 and 2 pm on base-town road.
The Chamber of Commerce urged the Kodiak City Council to enforce sanitation and fire safety ordinances. Speakers cited skid shacks and burned or disrepaired properties, including the Lyric Theatre and Cohen residence, urging notices to owners and a 30 day cleanup deadline with potential criminal complaints.
Chaplain John Weise USN will give the Independence Day Address after the flag raising on school grounds. Lt. W. E. Bond USMC is parade marshal for the annual event.
The town prepares a Fourth of July parade at 10 am forming on Brooklyn avenue and marching to the school yard for flag raising. Kodiak Naval Station units join the procession with prizes for floats and costumes as races, games, and a marathon with cash prizes unfold through the afternoon. Proceeds benefit the Rotary playground. a midnight surprise event closes the day.
The B and B Liquor Store was burglarized early Friday with $115 taken from the cash register and about $200 in the area. Owner Jess Blinn found the break in after opening, with entry via a side door. Sheriff’s office and U.S. Deputy Marshal Clarence Dizney are investigating the case.
Fiscal year 1952 hunting and fishing licenses go on sale July 1 in Alaska. Helen Carlson, licensing officer, replaces Emil Knudsen after years in the post. Licenses available through 12 noon and Friday evenings. buyers should bring old licenses. Paul Chapados notes military residents must show an affidavit of commanding officer.
