Kodiak Chamber Praises Dredging Crew At Harbor Project

The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce awarded commendation to Manson-Osberg dredging crew for courtesy and speed in completing the small boat harbor basin project. Dredge Captain Art Molvar and crew are lauded for civic participation and advancing western Alaska harbor safety and improvements. A parallel letter was sent to the U S Corps of Engineers Anchorage office commending Resident Engineer Jiggs Tice.

Car Turns Over On Mission Road

A car driven by J. C. Slaton with two passengers veered off Mission Road near the Mission Sunday evening, entering a ditch and turning over. Witnesses Harold Farley and Michael Renthrow avoided collision as the vehicle sped 60 to 65 mph. All three occupants, service members R. A. Harmon H. R. Ragsdale and the driver, were taken to Naval Station hospital and released the next day.

Chamber Officers Are Installed In Kodiak

O K Kincaid was installed as president of the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce at a noon installation luncheon. Retiring president John Gibbons praised the year’s progress and urged broader member support. Kincaid called for strong legislative and local activity and announced new committees including a Red Carpet Welcoming Committee headed by Eldon Lester and a Youth Activities panel to be formed.

Beat Down Move For Commonwealth In Senate Debate

Senate supporters of Alaska statehood defeated a move to grant Alaska Commonwealth status by a roll call vote of 50 to 29. The amendment would have tied Alaska to Puerto Rico style status with tax exemptions for earnings inside the state. Senator Eastland questioned the bill’s constitutionality as Thurmond denied any filibuster plans.

City Sanitarian And Nurse Assignment Approved In Kodiak

City council approved a contract with the Alaska Health Department for a full time sanitarian and a health nurse to serve Kodiak. The city will pay up to 1600 annually for the sanitarian services and provide an automobile clerical support space and supplies to the health center. Budget adjustments divert unused funds to cover an additional estimated 800 needed, with the sanitary engineer to work part time.

ACS Property Offered to City For Airport Use

Col. Carl Hatch reports reduced ACS activities in Kodiak and plans to move the receiving station by 1960. He says a city land portion exceeds ACS needs but could be made available with conditions. Access road must be built at ACS expense and the 140-foot antenna tower removed and stored at ACS cost.

Celebration plans firmed up with events for Fourth

The Chamber of Commerce takes over the big smoker on July 4 at the Labor Temple starting 8 pm with local talent. A Gay Ninety's review accompanies the street dance and a beer drinking contest. Proceeds defray celebration expenses while booth sites fill. Ole Johnson requests booth operators needing electric service notify KEA by July 1.

Boat races may be canceled without enough entries

The boat races set for the 4th may be canceled this year if interest does not rise, as stated by chairman Dick Berg. Few entries have been received. three events offer cash prizes of 100, 50, and 25 dollars. Races begin at 2 p.m. July 2 entry deadline. details and blanks appear in the MIRROR.
