Kodiak Fourth of July Program Plans Big Celebration

Ray Martin is general chairman as Kodiak prepares a large July 4 program starting with a flag raising then a parade. Prizes for decorated cars bicycles and baby buggies, children's races with a dime per entrant, a town marathon prize set at 300 dollars to 10 dollars, a junior marathon, speed beat races, log rolling and gymnastics. Rotary raffle draws at 8:30 with tickets at 1 dollar for a Ford sedan, free dance to 11:45, fireworks on Near Island, midway booths and food stands behind the Kodiak barber shop, official program in next week’s Mirror.

Rotary meeting set for next Tuesday at VFW club

President James Mrtz announced the Rotary club will meet next Tuesday at the VFW club. Members needing transportation should gather at the bank between noon and 2 10 PM.

Anniversary Program at Kodiak Center Sets Gala for Residents

Kodiak's Community Center marks its first anniversary with a 1:30 pm to midnight gala featuring a free dance at 9:30 pm by Four Hits and a Miss. Afternoon events include the second annual bicycle races, handicap contests, jacks, rope skipping, baseball, target throw, horseshoes, broad jump, marbles, and an obstacle race. Evening highlights include ping pong, square dancing, a $100 bedspread drawing at 11:30, and prize giveaways with dozens of awards and four seaplane rides as grand prizes. Marcus Meyer leads the program with center board and Rotary Club support, as volunteers decorate and prepare main hall drapes and decor.

Next Issue Out Friday July 4 Celeb Program

The Mirror announces its next issue dated July 5 will appear a day early and go on sale the morning of July 4. It will include the complete celebration program and advertising copy will be picked up a day earlier than usual.

Tourists Arrive Sunday for Kodiak Postwar Visit

Kodiak will host eight postwar tourists this weekend led by tour director Lloyd Olsen. The group includes William Krause a lecturer and photographer preparing a Holiday magazine article Hender Gregory of Washington D C Mrs Louise Huss of Cincinnati Olivia Young of Oklahoma City Mrs Barbara Huntress of El Paso Mrs Helen Blenderman of New York and Mrs F W Bush of San Francisco. They will travel by Pan American Airways from Kodiak to the airport and have reservations at the Kodiak hotel while the Chamber of Commerce arranges entertainment.

Former Resident Dies In Ketchikan

News from Ketchikan reports the death of Mrs. Glen Hyner wife of the Alaska Steamship agent there. A former Kodiak resident she lived here when Ayner was the local agent before his transfer to Ketchikan in 1942.

Community Center marks first year with large attendance

Attendance at the Community Center exceeded 60 000 in its first year, reported by Dr A Holmes Johnson chairing the board. The building hosted daily programs for servicemen NOB employees and visitors to Kodiak with physical education and social activities for area students. BPW club will host an open house in the center from 3 pm with Dorothy Haag as chair.

Red River Fishing Area Opens Monday in Kodiak Island

Marcus Meyer of the Fish and Wildlife Service announced that fishing will open in the Red River area on Monday while remaining closed in other locations. Local salmon fishermen are now entering the third week of the fishing closure.

Clean-Up Week Planned by Kodiak Council

The Kodiak council announced a forthcoming clean-up week and a survey of outhouses and sanitation. Land donated by Catholic church for a playground near the center could be used if low-lying areas are filled. A sewer extension to serve the area above the school was authorized. The body also addressed a $170 bill for work during a hospital water line freeze, a taxi license renewal deemed invalid for not meeting a 45 day limit, and a dispute over annexation petitioning on Mission road with Mayor Bettinger touting benefits of annexation and improved utilities.

Veterans of Foreign Wars cancel VEW Club celebration

Elaborate plans for a Veterans of Foreign Wars event at the VEW club on July 5 were canceled due to a conflict with a base celebration on the same day. The celebration has been rescheduled to September 1 Labor Day.

Airport Site Sought After Victory Cafe Luncheon

The Chamber of Commerce will file an land office application for an airport site after a luncheon at the Victory Cafe. Surveys will determine if Sprite cape to the Ernie Bryan home stead and Island lake areas are included. The chamber requests a customs official at Kodiak. Mayor Lee Bettinger outlined steps to apply for RFC loan for a two cold storage plant. Guests included Lynn Markham and Ira Bekey.

Alaska Proclaims July Fourth Observance and July Fifth Holiday

Governor Gruening hereby declares Saturday July 5 a public holiday in the Territory of Alaska to observe Independence Day with a half workday on that date and to encourage cessation of normal business so citizens may participate in weekend celebrations affirming freedom and peace for all peoples.

Pack Meeting Next Tuesday Cub Scouts Schedule

The monthly Cub Scouts pack meeting is set for next Tuesday July 1 at 7 20 pm at the community center. All Cub scouts parents and Rotary pack committee members are asked to attend. The Alaska Steamship Company announced that midnight lunches are now served to first class passengers aboard their vessels.
