Pre-fabs Rise Quickly at Aleutian Homes East Addition

Four pre-fab houses sit at the Aleutian Homes project in East Addition with more expected from the mid July shipment. Trucks haul panels from the city dock where loads from the Coastwise freighter were unloaded. Foundations sprawl across the valley as dirt work, road building, and rock hauling continue. carpenters and crews erect homes under active engineering supervision.

Fishing Closure Takes Effect Over Red Salmon Run

A three day fishing closure began Thursday at 6 am due to a small red salmon escapement. The Fish and Wildlife Service says fishing can resume Monday at 6 am, with commercial crews allowed until 6 am Thursday. Red salmon counts at Karluk Pier were low and Red River district is slow for the season.

Leslie Foss Tug at Union Oil Dock for Fuel

The Leslie Foss, a sea-going tug, berthed at the Union Oil dock this week to take on fuel. The vessel tows cement barges between Seattle and Alaska ports and was formerly named the John Michael used in the Bering Sea.

Sales Tax Beat By 3-1 Vote In Kodiak ISD

The Kodiak Independent School District defeated a proposal to fund new facilities with a sales tax by a 3 to 1 margin. Of 202 ballots cast, 151 voted against and 51 for the measure. Many objections were raised before the election, some sound and some absurd.

Two Boats Arrive Over Weekend With Passengers and Freight

Two vessels arrived over the weekend. The SS Tarleton Brown, a Coastwise freighter, docked Sunday with pre fab houses for the Aleutian Homes project and about 1000 tons of freight. The Denali reached port at 1 pm with 12 passengers for Kodiak from Seattle and Sitka and around 300 tons of freight.

Queen Contest To End On July 3 Kodiak Queen Coronation Night

The Kodiak Queen Contest ends at 6 pm July 8 with coronation during the Coronation Ball at the Civil Service Club Kodiak Naval Station. Contestants Marie Anderson Carolyn Gallagher Cherie Stover Arlene Herring Virginia Foster Sally Heitman will attend. Dancing begins 8 30 pm with Jules Radinsky’s band. Admission is one ticket plus 50 cents to fund the orchestra. The winner will reign over July 4 events including the Base Town Marathon and Pillar Mountain climb with cash prizes. Parade chair John Gibbons and MC Jules Radinsky to lead. Also features Fleet races, bicycle events for youths, and a street dance on the Fourth.

Heat Wave Continues As Kodiak Swelters

The body of Edward John Johnson, 55, was found in the channel between the Donnelley and Acheson dock and the Government dock. A coroner's jury identified clothing, a watch stuck at 1:25, and a fountain pen. Johnson, missing since May 7, reportedly spent the night on his boat Georgie. Regional heat tops 80, with Kodiak hitting 81.2 on Wednesday and 79 Thursday. Alaska cities report extreme warmth, river flooding, and road washouts from interior storms.
