A complaint filed in U S Commissioner’s court by Lee Bettinger charging Warren A Taylor with grand larceny involves lumber valued at 150 dollars allegedly misappropriated by the local attorney. Hearing set for today at 1:30 pm before Commissioner C C Naughton.
City tax due notices mailed this week per city clerk C Blankenburg. Property owners not receiving a notice should report to the clerk to declare property and its value to prevent taxes from accumulating and liens against unrecorded ownership.
Sivert Rasmessen, 66, a fisherman with Washington Fish & Oyster Co. at Port Williams, died Saturday about two hours from Kodiak while being rushed to hospital for medical care after a period of illness. He had been employed by the company for years.
Ki-Yi-Yippee Yay reports a Western roundup at Tom Felton ranch in Middle Bay Kodiak where about 50 calves were branded and dehorned. Rancher Tom Nelson supplied beef, with Sid Old and Kodiak cowgirls Delia Anderson Della Kinsport and Sue Scranton plus Jack Allman taking part. after the dust settled the crew shared a meal and headed home tired but happy.
The deceased, a Seattle resident, died after a sudden decline with unknown cause. Funeral services were conducted here Sunday at 4 15 pm and burial followed in the local cemetery. Records indicate he was born in Norway and was unmarried with no known relatives.
The fate of Attu village’s last white inhabitants is revealed. Charles Foster Jones and his wife slashed their wrists as Japanese forces landed. Jones died. his wife survived and is now in a Japanese concentration camp. The couple were known to many in Kodiak.
The former May residence on Mill Bay road occupied by Bill Evans was totally destroyed by fire at 3 30 this morning. The blaze reportedly started from a gasoline lamp.
Harry Essen 47, fisherman, died Thursday at Griffin Memorial hospital at 9 pm from internal abscesses after two weeks of treatment. He came to Kodiak from Ouzinkie, but lived in Carmel. Survived by his widow who accompanied him. funeral at 2 pm today with burial in the local cemetery. Fishermen's union, his organizing body, is arranging services.

Secretary Stimson reports total American casualties since Pearl Harbor at 63958 with 7528 killed 17128 wounded 16615 prisoners and 22678 missing. Navy losses include 7000 killed 4732 wounded 3556 prisoners and 11010 missing. Atlantic and Pacific actions noted with air and sea assaults across Tarawa Lae and Darwin plus shuttle bombing over Europe.
