Guard Shoots Fellow Marine on Station and Fleeing

A Marine corporal on duty at a naval station shot and killed a fellow Marine at No 3 gate then disarmed two guards at No 1 gate. He fled to Kodiak driving through town before barricading himself at a house near Mission Lake and surrendering after talks with a captain.

Merchants Defeat Elks 8 to 1 in Town Match

Merchants and Elks clashed on the town field with the Merchants winning 8 to 1. Pitcher Fergie Taylor for the Elks fanned 10, gave up 11 hits and 2 walks. Larry Deitzley allowed 1 hit, 5 walks and 12 strikeouts for the Merchants. Billy Watkins went 4 for 4 at short, while Zeer and Deitzler added 3 for 4 and 2 for 3 respectively. George Garroute led the Elks with a single and scored in the first inning.

Jaycees Promise Exceptional 4th Fourth of July Festivities

The Jaycees announce a major Fourth of July celebration beginning at 7 p.m. with a sky diving exhibition by Ron Short at the small boat harbor. Additional events include a second sky dive at 1 p.m. and activities such as blindfolded pillow fights on an elevated log, a whistle race at 1:45 p.m., with contestants supplying pillows and blindfolds and prizes for winners.

Merchants beat Cardinals 14 to 10 as Mickey Shuravloff faced 18 batters, giving up seven hits and all seven runs. Billy Watkins relieved in the third and struck out nine of the next 18 batters. Killing Bears Increase Killer Cattle Losses In Island

Cattlemen report rising bear attacks on island ranches with losses ranging from one to ten head. Joe Zentner lost ten, Ronald Hirsch six, Joe Beaty four, Ned Roberts two, and Dave Henley one. A predator man and Buck Stewart tried poison but failed. Al Erickson from Anchorage weighed in, and the game preserve boundary spans from Wiekoda Bay to Kaugak Bay, covering most of the island's south end.

Gov Egan Moves To Establish Supreme Court Alaska

Gov Egan began establishing the Alaska State Supreme Court by asking the state judicial council to nominate three justices for six vacancies. The six member council, three lawyers and three laymen, will submit candidates by early July. Appointments will be made by Egan after council recommendations. The move follows the Ninth Circuit Court decision that it lacked jurisdiction over appeals from Alaska’s interim system.

Kake Villagers Defy Trap Ban Trial in Juneau

Ernest Williams, president of Kake, pleaded innocent to violating Alaska’s 1959 trap ban. He was arrested as the state enforced the anti trap statute amid Federal backing allowing native gear at 11 sites. Williams awaits further hearing in Juneau. penalty up to a year or $5,000.

Proposed Ferry Study Authorized Between Homer and Kodiak

Richard Downing the Alaska Highway and Public Works Commissioner authorized a feasibility study of a Homer to Kodiak ferry system. Felix Toner will include the Kodiak study with a focus on current traffic, projected growth, vessel type, landing facilities, naval architecture input, and financing methods. Completion is set for November 1, 1959.

Fishermen Offer July 4 Tug of War Challenge

The undefeated Kodiak Fisher men Tug of War Team will challenge any team at 2 30 p m on July 4 to a rope pulling winner take all contest for a 50 prize. A spokesman said they can beat any Navy Marines Coast Guard or civilian team and will pull them through town.
