Halibut Season Closes Coastwide at Midnight July 11
The International Fisheries Commission announced halibut fishing along the Pacific coast of Canada the United States and Alaska will end at midnight July 11. Set-line permits remain valid until midnight November 16. In Kodiak local agent Mark Meyer said the season is quota driven and the district will close when the quota is met with about 60 to 80 boats active from Oregon and California. Meyer noted the salmon run is better than expected and the Karluk area has achieved the spring escapement with 351000 salmon escaped and about 50000 caught by Thursday evening.

Naval Hospital Corps Birthday Celebration at NAS Kodiak
The Naval Air Station Dispensary marked the 50th anniversary of the Naval Hospital Corps with a luncheon for corps members and invited civilian and military guests. The corps was formed in 1898, reached 120,000 during World War I, and now numbers about 16,000.
