Karluk District Closed for Fishing Amid Poor Runs
Karluk district will close to all commercial fishing at 6 pm today and stay closed until further notice. Roy Lindsley of the Fish and Wildlife Service said seals will mark the period June 16 and 17. Red River District and other island areas report poor fishing and slow runs for salmon near Chignik and Kodiak cannery notices were issued.

Fourth of July Plans for Kodiak Celebration Set
Kodiak's annual Fourth of July celebration moves forward with games races a marathon and prizes for children. Chairman Ray Martin leads preparations sending posters to canneries inviting attendance. The Navy Base to town marathon offers cash prizes to winner and runner up. a junior youth race is planned. Motor boat races near the Donnelley and Acheson docks are being organized with entrants urged to sign up. Last year A. J. Collins won the Burdhecraft in the big boat race. Activities on Marine Drive include children's races games and contests between Kraft's store and the Kodiak Bottling plant. The store will stock canes hats whips noise makers and balloons for a festive night with a midnight surprise event. Continued on page 4.

A new staff of officers and trustees was chosen at VFW Katmai Post 7056. George J. Sonntag was elected commander and named chair of the investigating board after a May audit ordered by Jack Davis. Four members walked out over the contested commander election as installation is planned for Tuesday.

Plane Mishap In Kodiak Airport Beached On Near Island
A Gruman Widgeon piloted by Russ Swartz of Kodiak Air Ways Inc was beached on Near Island Wednesday evening after a power failure before take off. There were no injuries and minor damage to the aircraft.
