Jaycees Announce Changes In The 4th Of July Pillar Mountain Climb
Kodiak Island Junior Chamber of Commerce reveals revised Pillar Mountain climb with two age groups and finish at White Alice Hill. A Junior Marathon for ages 13 to 17 routes from Small Boat Harbor, returning via Brooklyn Avenue. Senior runners 18 to 75 start at the same point and finish at Boat Harbor with new Marine Way. Prizes range 5 to 25 dollars. The event promotes Fun For The Kids with demonstrations and a greased pole climb offering a five dollar prize. Adm McKechnie Receives Honor From American Legion
Rear Admiral Arnold McKechnie was awarded a five year citation for meritorious service by the National American Legion at a VFW Post ceremony. George Cornelius presented the award as John Trent lauded memorializing the unknown soldier and Navy contributions to community life. Commander elect Victor Strash noted only three men in the nation have received such a citation, including McKechnie, Triaging Juneau convention remarks and urging closer veteran organization cooperation. Explosion Aboard M S Galena Delays Alaska Run
The M S Galena suffered an engine room explosion about 340 miles southeast of Kodiak, badly burning two crewmen who were to be flown to Seattle for treatment. The ship drifted 24 hours before Coast Guard assistance and was later moved by the SORREL to Sitka where repairs began. The Bittersweet and Sorrel crews were praised by Alaska Steamship officials for prompt aid.
