Bubendorf Rites Held in Kodiak Funeral Service for Civic Leader
Funeral services for Gilbert W. Bubendorf longtime civic leader and former U S Commissioner were held at Community Baptist Church with burial in the East Addition city cemetery. Bubendorf died after months of ill health at Griffin Memorial Hospital at age 32. He came to Kodiak in 1942 to work for Sims Drake and later served as bookkeeper for O Kraft and Son. He was U S Commissioner for the Kodiak area from 1945 until his resignation in May, and held multiple community posts including president of the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Kodiak Heath Council. He was born September 19 1916 in Humble Texas and studied at Humble High School and Houston Law School. He is survived by his wife Mina Hargett two children Joyce Ann and Gilbert Jr his parents and three sisters. (Continued on page 4)

Former Kodiak resident dies by own action at sea
The Wrangell Sentinel reports Wilbert P Smith, 46, a former Kodiak worker, was found dead Saturday evening on his trolling boat at Walea Inlet. A coroner's jury ruled death by own action by shooting himself. He is survived by a brother Howard in Kodiak and had owned property on Mission Road.
