VFW Audit Denied by Local Post Members

Members of Katmai Post 7056 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars dispute a MIRROR report that the club closed for an audit. Acting commander Paul Bleichner says the post is closed until a quartermaster bond is posted, after which an election will be held. An election is planned soon, with Edwin Decker and John McLaughlin noted as past and current commanders.

The former U S Post Office building owned by Donnelley and Acheson has been remodeled to host a D and A department. Robert Acheson junior partner said he is undecided which department should move into the building.

Alaska Airlines Sikorsky Sinks After Lagoon Strike

A twin engine Sikorsky from Alaska Airlines sank in Chignik lagoon after hitting an object during landing. All 20 aboard escaped to shore with life jackets and a life raft. pilot Swede Blanchard and co pilot Rusty Fannen survived. The aircraft had been in Kodiak recently and salvage is doubtful due to salt water damage.

Salmon Run Delayed in Kodiak Area This Year

Reports to the Fish and Wildlife Service indicate a late salmon run as the commercial season opens. Karluk and Red River areas report small catches by late yesterday. Stream guards and enforcement agents are stationed around the island, and the Kittywake II patrol vessel will join soon. FWS plane piloted by Al Kropf is based locally and on duty.

Elks Observe Flag Day at Kodiak Club

The Kodiak BPOE 1772 will observe Flag Day Thursday evening at the Elks Club with participation from a Boy Scout troop. The public is invited to attend and services begin at 8 pm.

Evangel To Begin Summer's Work

The Rev Norman Smith will arrive in Kodiak from Ouzinkie soon to prepare the Evangel for a summer cruise around Kodiak Island. Mrs Smith and their three children will join, continuing the family’s missionary voyage. Smith was skipper of the Evangel last summer.

Poppy Sales Totals By Legion And VFW Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary report over $1000 in poppy sales this year. Legion sold about $700 on May 19 Poppy Day while VFW sales neared $350 on May 26. Memorial services followed on May 30 at the cemetery and dock, with thanks given to Armed Forces based on the island for aid in the observances.

Oldsmobile Crash Damages Car at South Mill Bay Corner

Mrs Grant Wheeler drove an Oldsmobile that collided with Louie Savoy in a Ford at the South Mill Bay road and Alaska Way intersection Tuesday. Savoy’s car sustained about $100 in damage. Wheeler's Oldsmobile was undamaged.

Coast Guard Warns Waterfront Owners on Sabotage Risks

The 17th Coast Guard District commandant urged owners and operators of waterfront facilities to safeguard their establishments against sabotage and accidents. An information release cites existing statutes and Executive Order 10173, noting CG authority to protect vital port facilities and vessels, while stressing shore-side protection is for special cases.

Direct G I Loans End Mid 1950 for Veterans

The VA direct home loan program ends June 30 1950 and authorizes up to $10 000 at 4 percent for veterans to build homes in areas lacking private GI loan access. The regular GI loan program continues to July 25 1957. Both programs require minimum down payments under October 1950 credit controls.

The Kodiak Garden Club will meet Wednesday evening at Mrs. Glen Banks home on Mission Road. A discussion of garden problems followed by movies will be the program. The meeting convenes at 8 pm and refreshments will be served.

Canadian Vessels Sail To Alaskan Ports

A bill in the Senate by Warren Magnuson to permit Canadian vessels to serve Alaska receives a House companion from E L Bartlett. The measure would extend for a year the authority for Canadian ships to carry passengers from Haines and Skagway to Alaska ports and freight from Hyder to Alaska ports or the states, reflecting long relief from American flag service. Alaska Steamship Company, the major American carrier, has not opposed the proposal.
