Alaska Airlines Sikorsky Sinks After Lagoon Strike
A twin engine Sikorsky from Alaska Airlines sank in Chignik lagoon after hitting an object during landing. All 20 aboard escaped to shore with life jackets and a life raft. pilot Swede Blanchard and co pilot Rusty Fannen survived. The aircraft had been in Kodiak recently and salvage is doubtful due to salt water damage.

Salmon Run Delayed in Kodiak Area This Year
Reports to the Fish and Wildlife Service indicate a late salmon run as the commercial season opens. Karluk and Red River areas report small catches by late yesterday. Stream guards and enforcement agents are stationed around the island, and the Kittywake II patrol vessel will join soon. FWS plane piloted by Al Kropf is based locally and on duty.

Poppy Sales Totals By Legion And VFW Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary report over $1000 in poppy sales this year. Legion sold about $700 on May 19 Poppy Day while VFW sales neared $350 on May 26. Memorial services followed on May 30 at the cemetery and dock, with thanks given to Armed Forces based on the island for aid in the observances.
