The VFW in Alaska closed a five day convention with an annual banquet at the Elks Club. James W. Cothran warned of Communist threats to Alaska while two local Katmai Post 7056 members were elected as department officers. Fennel named Department Commander. Sitka to host next year’s gathering.

Gene Schilleman Dies in Denver Veteran Hospital
Eugene Schilleman a Kodiak resident for 11 years died at the Veterans Hospital in Denver Colorado after months of cancer treatment. He served in the Army in Alaska 1941 to 1945 and was a bartender, a member and post officer of Bartenders Local 875, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was born in Wisconsin on June 10 1908 and is survived by his wife, parents, and a brother Richard. Mrs Schilleman will transport his body to Lac du Flambeau Wisconsin for burial.

P O Box Rents Rise On July First
The U S Postal Department announces box rents increase effective July 1 through Washington D C. Postmaster Maurice Briggs states the new rates: 60 cents to 75 cents per quarter, 75 cents to 1 10, 1.00 to 1.50, and 1.50 to 2.25. First such adjustment since 1907.

Missing Men Reported From Kodiak Island Area
The Governor's office lists two men missing last heard from on Kodiak Island. Charles B. Johnson, 55 to 60, suspected Kodiak resident, and John Leyland, with alternate spellings, last wrote from Roberts Cannery in Uganik to relatives in Norway. Anyone with information should contact Box 1571 in Juneau.

Young Girl Flown Here For Operation
A seven year old girl was flown from near King Salmon to Kodiak for medical attention after appendicitis. The Coast Guard conducted the assist with Lt. Donald Moline, Lt. Claude LaBan, Chief Frank Wright and crew transporting the patient to Kodiak, following a relay from the Alaska Communications System.
