Navy introduces first Kodiak helicopters for air sea rescue
Two navy helicopters arrived at NAS Kodiak this week for air sea rescue work. Pilots Ensign Henry Buerkholtz and Lt (jg) James Price, both on their first Alaska tour, will fly aircraft built by Sikorsky valued around 70000 dollars. Helicopters, able to hover and reach 80 mph, can lower a sling to pick up stranded passengers and carry two more people besides the pilot. They arrived aboard the tender Pine Island, which also has a helicopter on board.

Captain Johnson To Leave On Denali
Captain Johnson and Mrs Johnson and two daughters will depart on the Denali for the states. He will surrender command of the navy base to Captain J Dow at a special morning ceremony. Captain Dow and family, aboard the Denali, were flown in yesterday from Homer to attend the change of command.

Several Kodiak men returned by PNA Thursday from Bristol Bay where they have been fishing. In the group were Bill Worth Pete Koppang Ed Hagins Harold Heglin George Torgramson Archie Hubley and Robert Mahle. Henry Neseth, who was also at NakoeK, went to Anchorage to join Mrs Neseth who is visiting there. Worth reported the fishing in the area the worst in many years.

Post Office Plans Move To Kraft's Show Room
Kodiak post office may relocate to the Kraft Chrysler Show Room on Alaska Way, pending Washington approval. The move would double space and improve handling of mail, especially seasonal peaks, with Kraft's building currently used for storage.

Fish And Wildlife Get Two New Boats
Two 40 foot boats earmarked for the Fish and Wildlife Service arrived on the coast at Kodiak. Roy Lindsley, FWS fisheries agent, said one converted craft is already in operation with two men aboard patrolling and conducting field work. Shearwater II named vessel will be used around the islands by Beals in his work. Both boats are powered by 225 hp Gay Marine engines.
