Kodiak to vote on jail site sale for federal facility

A special election will be held in Kodiak on Tuesday August 6 to decide on the city selling for one dollar a parcel housing City Hall for a new federal jail. The $140000 project would relocate City Hall to the south end of the lot and move it nearer the Horsman property. If the jail is not selected the land reverts to the city. The notice appears on page 9.

Planes Burn Adak Hangar Fire at Naval Base

A hangar at the Adak naval base was destroyed by fire of unknown origin on Wednesday evening, causing the loss of planes and prompting an investigation into the cause.

May Handle Silvers Possibility at Kodiak Dock

Mayor Lee Bettinger told the Chamber of Commerce a Seattle firm A P Packing Co would salt silvers this season if dock space and fishermen are secured. He said a wire from Joe Keller stated supplies would ship from Seattle once space and local fishermen are assured, with local unions promising ample workers for the market.

Kodiak residents will vote on September 10 to approve or disapprove the council action to issue bonds for a site and cold storage plant, enabling local fishermen to participate in the election.

Eight Die as Cannery Tender Cougar Sinks Off Kodiak

A 65 foot diesel cannery tender Cougar foundered in heavy seas off Kodiak opposite Rocky Point with eight dead and five passengers missing. sole survivor Harold Aga was rescued. The ship owned by Frank McConaghy Inc of Seattle had loaded 20,000 fish en route Karluk to Kodiak. Navy tug Sarsi and nine fishing boats aided in the search but no wreckage or bodies found. Aga was hospitalized at Griffin Memorial.
