New Public Health Nurse Assigned to Kodiak Island

Miss Cora Oberlies arrives as Kodiak Island’s itinerant public health nurse after a three year gap. Based in Kodiak Health Center, she will travel by plane to villages, with district supervisor Miss Ann Zaldaris assisting. Oberlies, from Dayton Ohio, is Western Reserve graduate. Kodiak loses nurse Aug 1 when Virginia McMullen resigns. Mrs Hafemeister will visit two to three times yearly.

City Assessment Complete in Kodiak

City of Kodiak finishes assessment of real and personal property. Notices will be mailed next week. City Council acting as Board of Equalization will meet at city hall each evening from August 4 to 9 between 7 30 and 9 pm to hear taxpayers complaints. Salmon Fishing Starts Again on Ko Diak Island

Roy Lindsley of the Fish and Wildlife Service announced the Ko Diak Island salmon season opens at 6 am Thursday and runs until August 13. He noted a relaxation of Cook Inlet fishing closures and earlier openings in Southeastern Alaska with several districts starting July 24 and others July 28.

Property Sale Date Changes Delinquent roll sale moved to Aug 25

The sale of property on the delinquent sales tax roll is rescheduled from Aug 18 to Aug 25 under city clerk Robert A Pedloff. The final roll runs four weeks starting Aug 2 in the MIRROR, with sale at the Kodiak school building. Restricted deed or native possessory rights properties are excluded per Third District Court order.

Kodiak District Receives $90,000 Federal Grant

A federal grant of 90 000 dollars supports the new school in the Kodiak Independent School District, under defense impact provisions. Congress also approved 346 000 for additional facilities, enabling a gymnasium and auditorium. Mr and Mrs Neil Warwick returned to Kodiak on the Denali after a recent wedding and he resumes teaching this year.

Coast Guard airlift frees injured man from Arctic coast

A Coast Guard PBY flew a 38 year old man from Unimak Island to Griffin Memorial Hospital in Kodiak after a broken hip. The Trojan brought the victim to Cold Bay where Navy Rescue coordinated the mercy flight. Lt jg Melvin Handley piloted with Lt Comdr Donald Luzius. hospital corpsman W Sczcepanski cared for the patient in notable pain aboard the plane.

REA Inspectors Visit Kodiak Plant In Alaska Tour
