Fish Trap Forum Set for October 12 Ballot

The Chamber of Commerce will host an open forum on the fish trap referendum on October 12 at a dinner meeting Thursday night August 12. The fishermen’s union seeks chamber backing to campaign against traps, while the civic group will gather information from two speakers on each side. Tickets are $2 and go on sale soon at Normans Photo Alaska Steamship office and the Bank of Kodiak Insurance department.

Architect Here For Cold Storage

Wallis George president of the Kodiak Ice and Cold Storage Co and Joe Wobleb architect for the plant to be built in Kodiak are in town to review the site before final plans. They arrived Thursday evening and plan to depart on tonight's plane. Pilings for the city dock end are on order and expected soon. after pilings are set the fish shed will be built and work on the cold storage plant will begin immediately.

No Kindergarten Declared For Kodiak This Year

Utterback announces no kindergarten in Kodiak for the year after discussions with the school board city council and territory of Alaska cite finances space and large first grade enrollment as reasons. The district will split first grade into two groups with space from the former kindergarten room. Music and shop teachers are still needed. Mrs Edyth Smith has repurposed her tailor shop from Mrs Ruth Lusk.

Dolly Olsen and Betty Kizer Lead Kodiak Queen Contest Entries

Dolly Olsen of Kodiak Cleaners and Betty Kizer, sponsored by local groups, are the first entrants in the Kodiak Queen contest tied to a car raffle by St Mary’s Catholic Church. Entries open to unmarried residents of Kodiak or nearby islands, ages 16 and up, with last year’s queen Cecilia King invited to crown this year’s winner. Tickets grant 100 votes per dollar, with the queen earning a trip to Seattle and celebration on Labor Day.
