New Base CO Named at Kodiak Naval Station
Capt L J Dow USN will report to Kodiak July 31 to relieve Capt Sohnson as commander of the naval operating base and naval air stations in the 17th district. Capt R L Johnson rotates to Washington DC. Dow, veteran aviator and 1926 Annapolis graduate, served with Adm Halsey and commanded destroyers Rendova and Badoeng Strait. Nelson Appeals Property Decision in Kodiak Island Land Case
Tom Nelson filed an appeal to the Third District court seeking restitution of premises against Sid Old. A transcript of Commissioner’s court proceedings was recorded in district clerk’s office. The Kodiak Island land dispute was decided for Old on June 6 by a U.S. Commissioner. Nelson served notice of appeal filed with the district court.

Battery Stolen From City Fire Truck During Paving
A new battery was removed from a city fire truck and replaced with a worn out unit. The truck was parked near the Belmont Bar during Alaska Way paving. Salvage Vessel Salvor En Route Westward From Alaska

Kodiak Cubs Ship To Seattle And Denver Bear Cage Incident
Two Kodiak bear cubs were shipped by Alaska Airlines to Seattle after modifications to their cages. An Alaska Airlines agent, Walt Muller, was scratched on the face when a cub reached through bars during loading, causing him to fall and injure his leg. One cub heads to Woodland Park Seattle and the other to Denver to replace a previous escaped bear. If the wandering Kodiak near La Grande is found, Denver will gain two Kodiak brains, per Madsen.

Kodiakians in Air Crash Near Seattle
Mrs Eleanor Wilming of Kodiak was severely injured when a Chicago bound C 46 crashed after takeoff at 10 08 pm. Seven people died as the plane plowed into houses. Thirty people, including 21 aboard the aircraft, were hospitalized. Amos E Heacock, president of Air Transport Associates, was aboard and helped evacuate the injured. Delores Felip, wife of navy chief Louis Felip, was also aboard and injured lightly.
