Alaska PA Data Warns of Price Regulation Enforcement

A Juneau statement from the Alaska PA headquarters says enforcement will focus on price violations and noncompliance with pre July 1 1946 regulations. The notice applies to all retailers and businesses and urges rapid record keeping of affected transactions.

Zoning and city property sales pass at Monday council

The council passed a zoning ordinance published last month setting a one year deadline for skid shack owners to upgrade to the standards of their lot. A jail lot ordinance offering city property for a federal jail was approved and will be placed before voters. A revenue bond for purchasing a site and building a cold storage plant had second reading and passed unanimously and will also face an election.

Karluk Decision Heard in Fairbanks Hearing under advisement next Friday

The Karluk fish reservation case before Judge Harry E ended in advisement with a ruling set for Friday July 18. The suit by the Pacific Packing Company and Kodiak canners seeks to bar enforcement of an order restricting fishing in Karluk waters to Karluk natives. Local residents traveled to Fairbanks for the hearing on Friday via the PNA plane.

The council approved monthly garbage bills after current charges. Non payment leads to service cut off and possible prosecution under the health ordinance. Delinquent totals reported at 1933.10 dollars prompt action.

Two Union Oil Co officials visited Alaska on a weekend inspection tour. W E Davenport Seattle district manager and Don Livingston Alaska manager led the trip, meeting local staff and reviewing operations during the Sunday and Monday visit.

Road work to continue with hazardous traffic delays

The town-base road will open at noon today but men and equipment will work for some time. Traffic will be hazardous until completion with delays expected. The road has been closed most of the past week for blasting and coverts placement.

Port Bailey Worker Dies in Transit to Kodiak

Teofilo Cacatlan of Seattle died yesterday en route to Kodiak for medical care. Officials attributed the death to cerebral thrombosis. He had been a hospital patient in Port Bailey earlier in July.

B-29 To Hop Over Alaska

An Army B-29 will attempt a nonstop 40 hour flight from Honolulu to Cairo next Monday following a great circle route over Juneau Greenland and Rome Rome and near the North Pole. The local CAA office will monitor the mission, claimed to be the longest non-stop flight yet attempted.

Doings At Kodiak Community Center Cribbage Tournament

The Kodiak Community Center hosts a cribbage tournament on Tuesday July 16 starting at 8 pm open to men and women. Cards boards and equipment provided prizes awarded to champion and runner up. Also today a kids field day at 11 am at school grounds or Center hall weather permitting. A Friday request dance features 560 recordings with free admission. A Sunday barnyard golf tourney begins at 3 pm with several noted players present and prizes for winners.

Two Kodiak Bear Cubs On Display At Center

Pat Cannon returned Wednesday from a trip to Larsen's bay with two Kodiak bear cubs destined for a U.S. zoo. The cubs will be on display this week at the Kodiak Community Center for residents to view a youthful Kodiak bear. born in February they are already large enough to require cages.

Larry Keighley color photographer for the Saturday Evening Post arrived at the base Tuesday by Naval Air Transport from Seattle on his first Alaska trip. He plans about four articles including a salmon industry piece at Bristol Bay and naval establishments in the Aleutians. He photographed Kodiak from Pillar Mountain, two bear cubs at Kodiak, bathers at Mission Lake, and the base Ski Chalet area and Bell's dairy.

Twin Tumbles injure Tots

The sons of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Austerman Allen age 3 and Dickie age 2 fell from a car on Millbay road at separate times. Both sustained scalp lacerations requiring medical care at GM hospital. Dickie grabbed the door handle then fell onto the roadway. Allen later fell from the unlatched car.
