Cordova Cannery Fire Destroys Gear and Salmon Cans

A fire at Cordova Ocean dock destroyed gear from the Western Fisheries plant including the crab plant webr house and Filipino bunk house. Main cannery and warehouse survived. Estimated gear loss 50 to 60 thousand dollars. About 2,500 cases of one pound salmon cans also burned. The Hafferty cannery beside the plant was unharmed.

Deposits Reach Air Time High at Bank of Kodiak

Bank of Kodiak shows escalating deposits from inception in 1940 to postwar highs. By June 1941 deposits reached 1,183,000 and by October that year 2,100,060.60. The bank crossed 3,000,000 in June 1914 and stood at 3,825,060.00 by January 1943 before dropping to 1,593,000 in September 1946 amid postwar recession.

Woody Island to Get One Classroom School Building

A small school for children of government employees on Woody Island will be built this year. L. R. Durkee of the Housing and Home Finance Agency informed Mayor Lee C. Bettinger, who received bid notices for local contractors. Captain J. C. Tily of Kodiak Naval Station also received copies. Specifications call for a one classroom school building.

Lundeberg UK Oversees Salmon Unloading Scheme

Frank McConaghy of Halferty Canneries arranged 75,000 cases of red and king salmon to be unloaded from the strike-bound Susitna freighter in Seattle. He flew to San Francisco to brief Sailor's Union chief Harry Lundeberg on moving the cargo amid a five week ship strike that halted all handling. McConaghy then returned to Kodiak.

Local building work advances on Kraft supermarket site

Lighting fixtures for Krafts new supermarket at Alaska Way and Brooklyn Avenue were installed this week. New refrigeration equipment arrived and plumbers installed rest room and heating fixtures. Jay Wolfs Kodiak Cleaners building on Alaska Way had windows installed. Both buildings are reinforced steel and concrete by Island Construction Co. of Ralph Shupp, Jay Tolbert and John Chase.

Fisherman Fined Fingers Lost at Cannery Hospitalized

Samuel Roberts of San Juan Fishing and Packing Co. was flown to Griffin Memorial Hospital by Bob Hall on Thursday after an accident at the cannery. He lost the tips of three fingers and is receiving hospital treatment.

Alaska Steam Breaks With PMA Strike Sparks Separate Talks

Alaska Steam has broken from the Pacific Maritime Association and seeks its own agreement with the Sailors Union of the Pacific. General manager D E Skinner says Coastwise Line is taking cargo, forcing the move. Talks with the union continue with planned follow ups while a prior six week strike rumor persists. Governor Gruening urged union leader Harry Lundeberg to separate the Alaska issue for possible settlement and criticized the lack of response to an earlier invitation.

Missing Teen Agers Found On Island

Roy Sanford and Jack Frost, teen-agers from Kodiak Naval Station, were searched for by the Marshal's office and police after leaving the dock July 4 in a skiff. They stranded on Holliday Island, built a raft, reached Near Island, and were brought to town by a passing boat. Assessments will be mailed to property owners this week and the City Council will review assessments after August 1 with business forms due at City Hall by Aug. 1.

Eisenhower Wins GOP Nomination On First Ballot

Minnesota shifts its 19 votes to Eisenhower on the first ballot finishing the roll call. He tops 604 needed, clinching the Republican nomination as Alaska and Texas switches push the tally to a landslide. Taft Warren Stassen and MacArthur trail. Nixon’s page-continues.

Snider Votes With Taft Delegates At Alaska Test

Chicago reports three Alaska Republican delegates sided with Taft in the first factional test at the convention. Gerrit Heinie Snider of Wasilla, a territorial senator, is named as one Taft supporter. He previously presented Mrs. Eisenhower with furs valued at about $400, claims to have trapped them himself.

Outside Fishermen Die In Storm

Three San Francisco fishermen died as Bristol Bay storms claimed nine boats and caused heavy gear losses. Eight more fishermen reported missing as 80 mph winds and near zero visibility overturned sail and power vessels during the height of the salmon run. Local Bristol Bay residents sheltered as Kodiak crews flew in. ten local fishermen were present when the storm struck.

Bears Kill Cattle. Two Ranchers Lose Stock Near Pasag Shak

In the Pasag shak area, a bear killed two cattlemen’s livestock including a two year old heifer belonging to Bob High tower and a one year old owned by Joe Zentner. Zentner also lost a yearling in April. Zentner later killed a bear within 50 yards of the carcasses.
