Orpheum Theatre to Close for Two Weeks for Remodeling
The Orpheum Theatre will shut for about two weeks after the final show Monday night for repainting and redecorating. James Martz announces the front will be rebuilt and new seats installed. Martz bought a half interest from Jorgen Fredrickson, who became sole owner after purchasing Rollen Nipps. Nipps now lives outside. Fredrickson, Nipps and Dr. Avery Roberts started the theatre in 1940. Roberts later sold to the others. R. R. Sunday ran the theatre 1940 to 1945 except for a few months in 1943 when Martz relieved him for vacation. Martz has managed since 1945.

Base To Be Host At Meet At Naval Base
The Naval Operating Base will host a softball tournament from Tuesday to Sunday with about 22 teams invited. On the final day a banquet will honor all teams and trophies will be awarded to first and second place. High ranking Alaskan Command officers will attend.

Captain N S Lowrie, 17th Naval District Supply Officer for 16 months, leaves today for Newport Rhode Island to attend advanced instruction at the Naval War College. He is succeeded by Captain George W Foott, USN, who arrived at Kodiak during the past week.

Missing Leg Mystery Solved by Kodiak Marshal
U S Deputy Marshal Clarence Dizney identified a two foot length of marine fibrous growth as a leg portion after a July 4 sighting by Lee Caddell who said a sailor reported seeing a human leg in Big Lake. The item, decomposed and emitting odor, was shown outside the Federal jail.

Senate Halts Johnson War Damages Bill
The House sent a bill to pay fur farm damages to Jacob Johnson, halted by the Senate due to an objection. Delegate Bartlett says it likely will pass when resumed, as the opposing senator now supports passage. the measure would award Johnson up to 15000 dollars. Denali crewman dies after heart attack at hospital
Lerey Stull 59 a civilian cafeteria employee at NOB died after a heart attack on leaving the Denali gangplank. Rushed by taxi to Griffin Memorial Hospital he died there. Born May 29 1890 in Augusta Illinois he is survived by wife and three children. Cremation planned with private services after Mrs Stull’s sister arrives.

Red River District Closed to Commercial Fishing

Mission Workers Vacationing on Denali Voyage
Miss Rose Graziano and Mike Vivienne Greene of the Kodiak Baptist Mission were aboard the Kodak Island trip on the Denali. After the voyage they will tour the mainland for a month of sightseeing and plan a reunion on Kodiak by early July. Goldie Eins was a PNA passenger Thursday and went to Aren, Idaho.
