Independence Day bash in Kodiak Island set for big celebration

The Fourth unfolds with hundreds joining in a large Independence Day event in Kodiak Island. Rotary and Chamber of Commerce volunteers coordinate amid Navy and Coast Guard support, with grand prizes, parades, dances, and a full program led by Ray Martin.

Alaska Steamship freighter Hore Knot sails with freight

The Alaska Steamship Co freighter Hore Knot departed June 30 carrying 241 tons of freight for Kodak and 1100 board feet of poles for KikA. The Rose Knot will call at Anchorage Seldovia Seward and Kodiak.

Community Center hosts a weekend program with Protestant services Catholic Mass and Benediction flag-raising and speeches by Twitchell. Includes tricycle races for all ages, basketball free throw, rolling pin throw for women, obstacle races, baseball and football drills, pingpong exhibition, outboard races with prizes, VFW initiation, old time square dance, and modern dancing. Parking rules urge use of school grounds after 2 pm. no Main Street or Alaska Way parking. Grand parade and children's events highlighted by floats, pie eating, and penny scramble. Rotary carnival and fireworks raffle finish late night with center grounds open and city dock events.

Owen Nominated for Territorial House Seat Victory

A. A. Owen Jr, nominated for the territorial house of representatives in April, has secured seventh place among Democrats. Stanley McCutcheon sent a congratulatory note this week. With ballots from distant precincts still arriving, officials expect final tabulation soon.

Fairbanks Cracks Down On Gambling

Fairbanks council enforced a closure order on gambling venues after Brig Gen Gaffney of the city wing at Ladd Field urged a cleanup. Dice cups disappeared, slot machines were padlocked, and card rooms darkened as the Air Force pressed for a tightened crackdown.

In Falconer two city officials resign their elective posts, Wilton White to leave the school board June 30 and Tuck Wheeldon from the city council citing time pressures. Three teenage boys from Falconer face charges in Anchorage for burglary and larceny connected to robberies at Kraft and Erskine Co. Falcone is bound over for grand jury, with testimony detailing stolen goods and weapons moved to his home. Deputy A. S. Marchal and Paul Herring testified Falcons movers involved, as investigations note property hidden in a suitcase and cans around Falcone’s home.

Wildlife Agent Returns From Trip

Frank Beals, refuge manager of the Aleutian and Kodiak Island Wildlife Refuges, returned this week from a two month summer trip to inspect sea otter populations and reproduction and to seal blue fox pelts. He reported the sea otters are doing well with many young, and noted cooperation from armed forces with the Fish and Wildlife preservation program. He journeyed by plane and small boat visiting Cold Bay False Pass Sanak Scotch Cap Cape Saunchef King Cove and Amchitka before returning via Anchorage to Kodiak.
