Four teachers named for next school year
Independent School Board offers contracts to four teachers for the coming year. Edward Rogan will join Ko ek after summer duties with the Alaska Road Commission in Kenai. Isabelle Goldthorpe from Milledgeville Illinois will teach home economics and chemistry. Charles Anderson of Pittsburg Kansas will teach math and shops. Howard Carpenter of Arma Kansas will coach basketball and teach commercial subjects. Ivory Schott, appointed superintendent last spring, married June 22 in Los Angeles and will arrive with his wife around mid August. Mrs Schott taught East last year in the Hawaiian Islands.

Contractors Seek Housing for Kodiak Plant Construction
The Kodiak Ice and Cold Storage Company's new building on the city dock hinges on housing for 75 to 100 men. Al Long, leading piling work, noted bids to construct the plant close in Juneau on Thursday. A bidding contractor asked Long to list rooming houses. Long can be reached at Ralph Shupp's residence.

Jeep Charms Nail Cleanup Sparks Street Puncture Reduction
Willard Hall, a city employee, used a yellow jeep with a ground magnet to sweep Kodiak streets from Marine gate to town, collecting nails, wires and metal slivers this week. Mill Vokacek, city street superintendent, says the magnetic pickup covered all roads and yielded a large haul loaned by the Naval Operating Base to the Alaska Round Commission. Judith Copon in Washington was convicted on two counts of spying for Russia, facing up to 13 years in prison and a $12,000 fine.

John Gibbons plans a self powered garbage truck run to the city dump after repairs at Patterson's Service Station. The 10,670 pound vehicle was damaged when a preventer broke during unloading from the Alaska Steamship Square Knot at the city dock. Repairs will be paid by Alaska Steamship Co. Gibbons expects the truck ready in about two weeks, missing the July 4 parade and bathing suit plan.

Coast Guard PBYs Locate Two Drifting Fishing Boats
Two Kodiak Coast Guard PBYs found disabled fishing boats this week. Pilot W H Schmidt spotted the purse s e er J O Edwards off Sitka after a six hour search and towed it in. Another PRY piloted by H W Wooley sighted the Zephyr with two men aboard after a three hour search. The Zephyr was overdue at Swikshak cannery and drifting in Shelikof Straits. The Tiger directed the plane to the Zephyr and towed it to Kukak.
