Chamber Gets Report On City Projects And State Bill

Chamber of Commerce meeting focused on water and sewer work and the east addition housing project with attorney Paul Dupler presenting a Washington sourced report to Mayor Lee Bettinger. Bids for headworks and part of the distribution system were to be sought around early February. Bettinger wired the Mirror with notes on a $20 million public works budget hearing and progress on housing projects. The Alaska Statehood Bill was to reach the Senate floor with a close vote anticipated if not filibustered.

Mailboat Aground At Alitak

Skipper Robert von Scheele grounded the mailboat Shuyak in the east channel near Akhiok to prevent drifting during a big storm. The vessel was not seriously damaged and a rescue via Juneau followed by Kodiak return is planned. No mail was lost.

Birth of Michael John Levi in Phoenix Arizona

A son, Michael John, was born January 12 to Mr and Mrs Walter Levi of Phoenix. The mother’s parents are Mr and Mrs H J Hunt, and Mrs Hunt is formerly Pau line Kraft of Kodiak Alaska.

Mrs Sven Mahle Services Held

Mrs Sven Mahle 60 was buried in the Russian cemetery after funeral services at the Greek Russian Orthodox Church conducted by Father Alexander Popoff. She died Saturday at Griffin Memorial Hospital after long illness. Survived by husband, nine children, and 20 grandchildren with seven great grandchildren. Born October 20 1891 at Chignik, she lived mostly at the Peninsula and arrived in Kodiak in 1951. Children listed include Lena Metrokin Kodiak Henry Erickson Chignik Hilda Pohomas San Francisco Emily Nekeforoff Kodiak Sophie Poulson Anchorage Carl Walter Robert Nora Erickson.

Truman hints at possible U S Senate run in Missouri

President Truman told a news conference he may announce his political intentions before Missouri Senatorial Primary filing deadline of April 29. He opened the door to a possible Senate run instead of reelection but gave no clear indication of how seriously he is considering it. The tax bureau overhaul survived a first congressional test as the House expenditures committee rejected a push to kill the reorganization plan abolishing most political appointments in the Internal Revenue Bureau.

Lee C Bettinger current in Washington reports to the Chamber of Commerce that Kodiak cannot begin harbor work unless Congress authorizes it and funds are appropriated. He notes 1400 authorized river and harbor projects total 12 billion dollars, and Congress has cut civil construction budgets while adding new projects.

Tom Williams Dies at 68 in Kodiak Hospital

Tom Williams, 68, died at 2 30 am Friday at Griffin Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. A Kodiak resident for several years he leaves two children Richard 17 and Roger 13 who reside at the Kodiak Baptist Mission. A brother is believed to live in Tacoma Washington.

CG Flies Woman To Hospital

A Coast Guard PBY transported Mrs. Eprozina Peterson to Griffin Memorial Hospital for treatment after a medical request from the tug Patrick. CG Cutter Bittersweet relayed the call to Kodiak Air Detachment, and a PBY under Cmdr John D. Chapados Recalled to Navy Duty as Game Agent

Russell R. Hoffman will relieve Paul Chapados February 1 as the Fish and Wildlife Service game agent for the Kodiak area. Chapados has been recalled to duty with the U S Navy in the Naval Reserve. Hoffman was stationed at Cold Bay Alaska before coming to Kodiak last fall. Chapados hopes to return to Kodiak after an 18 month tour.

Naval Base Contract To Two Firms

A lump sum contract of 5 147 000 dollars to build more communications and aviation facilities at Kodiak Naval Station was awarded jointly to Johnson Drake and Piper of Minneapolis and Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company of Seattle. The work will be under Capt James Tily Public Works Officer for the district.

Seattle union rejects affiliation with Bridges group by 34 vote

Members of the Independent Alaska Fishermen's Union in Seattle voted against affiliating with Harry Bridges' International Longshoremen's Union by a narrow 34 vote margin. The decision concludes a two year dispute between union factions over the affiliation.

Ring Splice to call Kodiak before Seward trip

The Alaska Steamship Company freighter Ring Splice will call at Kodiak before sailing to Seward on the January 30 trip, reversing earlier plans. Kodiak Chamber urged the stop due to perishables at risk, but ASC initially declined. A Thursday wire said routing now changes Ring Splice to Sitka then Kodiak with the next Kodiak-bound ship leaving Seattle February 27.

Tax Man Due In February For Alaska Taxpayers

Deputy IRS collector Albert W. Popp will visit the Kodiak Hotel from February 17 to 21 to advise taxpayers on income tax forms. Any person with gross income 600 dollars or more must file a return, even if not taxed. Married couples must file if combined income reaches 1200 dollars or, if one spouse earns 600 dollars or more. Missing blank forms does not excuse timely filing. Forms available at local banks, post offices, or the Tacoma office. nearest zone office is Anchorage.
