Three Mailboat Crew Die After Dory Capsizes

Three crew members of the Aleutian Mail died in a second mishap after a previous rock collision near Wrimik Island last week. Brad Benge from Brownsburg Indiana Reynolds Gilbert and Bernard Anderson from Squaw Harbor were lost after leaving the mailboat at Sand Point to shore. They were last seen January 15 and the dory was found ashore with its motor nearby. Bodies of Gilbert and Benge recovered. Weather was windy when they left. The Aleutian Mail towed by Mataco was making temporary repairs at the naval base to reach Seattle for final repair.

Kodiak High School Baseball Team Picks Up Wins and Losses

The Kodiak High School baseball team went 1 1 this week. On Wednesday they fell to a Marine five 36 to 25. On Thursday they beat Navy High School 12 to 11 in a close afternoon game.

BPW entertains members at climb dinner and dance

Sixty members and guests attended the buffet supper and enjoyed dancing afterward at the Business and Professional Women's Club event Monday evening. Musical entertainment featured Tom Hubley on guitar and Hobo Jo on the accordion.

Elks To Gather Here In March

A two day jamboree in Kodiak marks the Bills Club opening on March 6 and 7. Between 100 and 200 Elks and their wives from Anchorage are expected, with delegations from Seward Cordova and Ballard. Fish Trap Hearing Begins Monday

A joint hearing on Alaska salmon trap site bills opens Monday. House and Senate committees propose leasing traps via a priority system to Alaska communities or existing operators, with varying preferential percentages and a 15 year lease term.
