Petition Circulates for Better Kodiak Mail Service Vessel

A community petition urges the Post Office Department and the Maritime Commission to provide a vessel of at least 2000 tons to improve mail service for Kodiak Alaska and other communities along the Alaska Peninsula. Signatures are being collected at local stores and offices including Krafts Knudsens City Market and Pacific Northern Airlines. The petition asks the Maritime Commission to assign the vessel to Berger Transportation Company to replace the Garland contract for Seward to Kodiak and westward routes.

U S C Men Arrive to Organize Kodiak USO Club

Two USO representatives arrive this week at Kodiak Naval Station to organize a local USO club. Elliot Hymans is named director and John A. Van Bis Jr. will draft interior plans for the former Kodiak Variety Store building. Stock and supplies are moved from the site. Hymans also plans a Junior Hostess Group to assist the USO. The Variety Store location remains undisclosed.

Fire Siren Signals Map for Citizens and Report Number

The MIRROR publishes fire siren signals and the reporting number 2345. One long blast calls attention to a fire. follow with one to four short blasts to indicate location districts such as city docks Pillar Mountain Carlson Hill Mill Bay road North Brooklyn Avenue and Mission Tagura Road. Kodiak Water System and School Building Bid Window Opens

Alaska Public Works reports Kodiak to bid early 1952 for a 40 million gallon water reservoir filter plant and sewer lines with a $511,000 project cost and for an independent school district trade school building priced at about $465,000. Final plans are in preparation with Hubbell and Waller Engineering and Wm Arild Johnson and Associates.

Ten Kodiak women advance in Red Cross nurses aides program under Sister Mary Frances at Griffin Memorial Hospital. Bids for a Navy project at Kodiak Naval Station include joint bid by Johnson Drake and Piper with Puget Sound Bridge and Dredge at 5 248 000 dollars J A Jones Construction 6 175 000 Haddock McClure Gerrick and Swinerton 6 295 000 Rue Contracting Co 6 995 000 The Navy Department will study the offers in Washington and will select an award after review and government estimate not released.
