Navy to hold arctic maneuvers near Ugak Island area
The Navy announced 18 000 personnel will train in Arctic maneuvers near Ugak Island Kalsin Jathmus Portage Bays including Old Woman Elbow Reratin mountains Pillar Mountain and Monashka Bays. Maps will be posted at town offices and base gates. Live ammunition and explosives will be used with warnings to stay clear from Jan 17 to Feb 15.

Mrs Maurice Briggs fell on the ice Saturday night, breaking her hip, and was reported in satisfactory condition by the hospital. After working late at the post office she walked toward home on Mill Bay Road around 9 pm, slipped near the ACS tower road junction, and was aided by three ACS men who took her to the hospital. Mr Briggs was away on vacation, and Al King assists at the post office.

An aluminum coffee pot boiled dry on an electric stove in the Kodiak Apartments Monday evening triggered a rapid fire department response. The alarm rang at 5 44 and by 5 47 the truck arrived with a hose connected to a hydrant. Mrs Gordon Glithe re, the manager, arrived first and removed the scorched pot. No damage occurred.
