Murder conviction and life sentence in fur coat embezzlement case

Louise Williams Allred was found guilty of embezzlement by agent after a 30 minute jury deliberation. A fur coat found at her Fairbanks home was proved to belong to Mrs. Milton Brown and had been stored at the Fairbanks Agency where Allred worked. The coat’s Seattle origin was disputed by a Seattle saleslady testifying the coat was a different fur.

Registrants Warned to Complete Alaska Transfers

Draft registrants who have not registered in Alaska and secured certificates of transfer must act now. Selective Service Headquarters at Juneau issued the warning this week and said noncompliance will be treated as delinquency and referred to the district attorney for action.

Citation Is Received For Lt Erskine Promotion

Lt Wilson Erskine U S Navy has received a citation recommending promotion for actions from August to December 1943 in the South Pacific. The citation commends his fine character and qualification in submarines and notes two wartime patrols sinking and damaging ships, with a recommendation for Navy or Marine Corps medal for heroism and his Merchant Marine experience aiding his rank.

Chlorination Expense Still Disputed at City Council Meeting

A false alarm was sounded Wednesday at 9 20 p m when burning garbage in the residential district at the foot of Pillar Mountain was mistaken for a more serious fire.

Foster father learns Pvt Morlock dies of Guadalcanal injuries

Pat Lynch, employe of A. T. Beckett Construction, received word Tuesday that his foster son Private Ray Morlock, 22, U S Marine Corps, died in a Louisiana hospital from injuries suffered on Guadalcanal. Morlock had been treated eight months and was recently transferred from a California hospital where he was listed as progressing toward recovery before the fatal outcome.

Services Held For Resident Angel Valenzuela

Angel Valenzuela aged 56 died at Griffin Memorial hospital from cancer. Born in Mexico he lived many years in Alaska moving to Kodiak from Cordova. An experienced shoe cobbler he had recently worked at Blinn's pool hall. Survived by a brother and sister in Los Angeles. Catholic funeral services were held Tuesday at 4 pm at Union Hall with interment in the local cemetery.

Elmer Johnson Opens Office at Sunbeam Hotel

Elmer Johnson acting for Marshall Crutcher an accountant arrived this week and set up a local office at the Sunbeam Hotel to handle accounting work for local clients.
