A Navy task force of six ships will arrive at NOB Kodiak Friday for three days of cold weather drills with the Aleutians. The joint Army Navy exercise is named MiCoWx50 Minor Cold Weather Exercises. Commander's name is not disclosed. Unofficial reports suggest 2300 personnel may take leave during the visit. The events mirror last year’s Kodiak drills known as the Battle of Kodiak Island where 18000 sailors and Marines tested cold weather gear.
A four engine MATS C-54 overrun the runway at NOB Wednesday night on a routine Adak to Kodiak flight. No serious injuries. Mechanical failure blamed. Pilot Lt. L A Haldeman and co pilot Lt. W E Hartman injured lightly. Nurse Lt. W E Ware among passengers. Investigation to follow per Navy spokesman.
The Business and Professional Women's Club in Kodiak kicks off the March of Dimes drive on January 16 led by publicity chair Mrs. Ed Pecore. A baked goods sale at City Market on January 28 funds the general drive, followed by a January 30 dance at the Elks Club. Call Mrs. Jack Hinekel to contribute baked goods.
Postmaster Maurice Briggs announced that post office boxes may not be shared by another family or business. The move to a new location added 203 boxes, making them available. box access is limited to individuals, families, firms, or corporations, with short-term visitor access allowed for up to 30 days.
Ken Wade prepared a preliminary draft pamphlet for travel agencies and mailing, shown to members after the meeting. Merrill Coon asked Dr A Holmes Johnson and Marshall Crutcher to review before printers, with Base Town Committee members listed as Hinckel and others.
Alf Torgramson began razing the burned Lyric Theater remains after a wind storm blew debris onto his house. He plans to leave the office section by Alaska Way, repair and rent it, while removing the second story where the fire started and using only the ground floor.
The Ko diak Community Players will present Ladies of the Jury at the navy gym January 30 31 and February 1 after two postponements due to base personnel transfers. Richard Avare directs and production manages the comedy and tickets will be sold locally. A new plywood stage set replicates the original New York version with new lighting funded by the group. The theatre name was proposed by Carl Tennyson of the navy who recently transferred from Kodiak and formerly edited the Morning Press.
Kenneth Anton and Floyd Cape face a re trial for the Nov 20 1949 Doghouse shooting. The new trial starts Monday at 10 am in the federal jail per Commissioner A M Vokacek. An earlier trial ended with a hung jury in December.
Kodiak Garden Club holds its first meeting of the year Wednesday evening at Mrs. Jay Holzman s home. The session begins at 8 pm with refreshments served. William Worth acts as city wharfinger while Gene Marlar attends a Seattle Alaska Steamship agents meeting.
KEA issues prompt aid from REA Technical Standards Division with top priority for Kodiak outages. Insulators and wires spray salt from windstorms causing arcs and overloads. REA studies fixes and plans to mail remedies within a week. Leon Johnson says a specialist is needed to inspect local causes. Donald Lowery to visit Kodiak from Washington to assist.
The Chamber of Commerce seeks town and harbor photographs for a three color pamphlet. Submissions must be taken in the last six months with strong black and white contrast. Photos will be returned after publication. Submit to Ken Wade or the Kodiak MIRROR.
Postmaster Maurice Briggs reported that local post office business grew about 22 percent in 1949 compared with 1948. He noted the 1949 total is more than 60 percent higher than the 1945 figure, reflecting continued expansion in mail activity.
