Stockholders May Call For Cold Storage Audit

A stockholder committee of Kodiak Iee and Cold Storage Company plans a meeting at the Montmartre Inn to demand financial statements and a stockholder policy report. Marshall Crutcher urged a CPA audit and possible legal action, citing no company accounting for years. The city suit seeks to vacate city dock quarters over a halted building project. Clothing Department Moves at Donnelley and Acheson

The Men’s Clothing Department has been moved from the main building to the former U S Post Office site. Manager Bob Acheson says the change provides more space for hardware and grocery departments and creates a more attractive spot for the men’s line.

Chamber Protests Ship Route To Kodiak Visit

The Chamber of Commerce sent a telegram to Alaska Steamship Company this week asking the next freighter bound for the territory late this month to call at Kodiak before proceeding to Seward. Officials say mainland ports are several degrees below freezing and vegetables bound for local merchants would freeze if the ship calls there first. Kodiak has seen little cold weather so far this winter.

General Dwight Eisenhower signaled he would seek the Republican nomination if supporters urge him. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge said he will enter Eisenhower in New Hampshire GOP primary. President Truman said he would campaign against Eisenhower if he gets the nomination and would decide before July convention.

Tom Nelson Kodiak cattle man died Sunday afternoon at Griffin Memorial Hospital at age 64 Funeral services held at Elk's Club Kodiak Rev William Stone conducted the service Nelson lived in Kodiak since 1936 and was a member of the Kodiak Livestock Growers Association He was born in Nevada Missouri November 28 1880s and had ranching roots in Oregon and Silver Lake He is survived by a son and three brothers with a sister in Illinois Burial will be in the city cemetery

Mercy Missions In 51 At Kodiak Coast Guard Air Detachment

In 1951 the Coast Guard Air Detachment at Kodiak Naval Station conducted 58 assistance flights besides delivering supplies to three light stations and one Loran station. The unit aided 665 people, including vaccinations. Of the missions, 36 were medical and the rest searches for overdue boats, aircraft, and missing persons. Flight time totaled 503.4 hours over 408 000 square miles, with 50 000 pounds of supplies carried.

Fire department tackles chimney blaze at local home

The Volunteer Fire Department responded to a chimney fire at the home of Chief and Mrs Bruce Cole on Thursday. The fire siren sounded at 3:50 pm and damage was reported as slight. Chief Cole heads the Shore Patrol office, succeeding Chief Ken Soldai.

Fire Sweeps Building on Navy Station

A Kodiak Navy Station fire gutted the Alsec Theatre Chief's Club barber shop beauty shop and package store in one building. The alarm started at 3 12 am with eight minutes to a second alarm as Kodiak firefighters from three pumpers two crash trucks and one Fort Greely engine fought the flames leaving only walls. Fire Marshal McArthur put the loss near 300 000 and noted a proposed one and a half million dollar theatre plan submitted to Washington DC before the fire. Five people faced smoke exposure two treated at a dispensary. no other injuries reported.

Masquerade Ball at Elk's Club Hosted by Russian Women’s Club

A masquerade ball sponsored by the Russian Women’s Club of Kodiak will be held Monday night at the Elk's Club starting at 8 pm. Admission is $1.25 plus tax with prizes for best costumes. Tickets went on sale earlier today from club members. music for dancing will be provided by local musicians.

Two Public Health Nurses Slated for Kodiak Duty

Two public health nurses, one to serve Kodiak and the other the surrounding island, are due to arrive soon, according to a letter from Dr. Robert L. Smith of the Territorial Department of Health. Kodiak has lacked a nurse for several months. The nurses’ names were not mentioned in the letter.
