Art Gregoroff Dies At Seward
Art Gregoroff, 31, died Tuesday morning in the Seward sanatorium of tuberculosis. He was born in Afognak, served in the Army mostly in Alaska and the Chain, worked at the navy base until July, and is survived by his mother, two Kodiak brothers, eight sisters in various cities. He was buried in the American Legion cemetery in Seward. Separately, leathercraft classes at the Community Center began last Monday under Aileen Wade and John Gibbons, with a three month tool use registration of $1.50 and minor material costs.

The annual March of Dimes drive in Kodiak begins Thursday with coin jars distributed to local businesses. The highlight is the January 31 community center ball with advance ticket sales aiding polio funds and at the door proceeds going to the center. BPW sponsors fund drive for infantile paralysis victims led by Mrs. Mabel Fenner. A charity auction is led by Mrs. Marjorie Gunderson. BPW hosts a party January 19 at Montmartre Inn with Miss Lilian Morris as chair.

Ten Rescued From Spencers Grounding At Kanatak
A Spencer cannery tender carrying two women one child and seven men ran aground near Kanatak on New Year Eve. Navy and coast guard rescued all, bringing them to Kodiak where the adults suffer frostbite and shock, the boy Calvin frost bitten. The survivors endured icy rocks and snow awaiting help as two navy vessels and a privateer plane aided. The Spencer was destroyed. insurance covered the boat but papers were lost.

Chamber Drives For Members Push Statehood Letter
The Chamber of Commerce plans to thank President Truman for suggesting Alaska statehood in his annual message. A resolution to send the letter was approved at Thursday's meeting. The annual membership drive began January 1 with John Gibbons as chair and targets contacting all current and prospective members. The $25 company membership is a focal emphasis this year.

Petition To Study Consolidated Kodiak School District
A petition to form a consolidated Kodiak school district will be presented at tomorrow’s League for Better Citizenship meeting at 2 PM in the Community Center. Attorney John Hughes drafted the petition, to be presented by John Gibbons, League chair, with 25 percent of last election voters required to sign about 100 names. If approved by the district court, an election will be held with a 5-member district board chosen. supporters say the move would secure more funds and equalize school costs.
