Two Day Kodiak Wind Storm Destroys Roofs and Power
A severe wind storm from the northwest battered Kodiak Island for about 26 hours, lifting tar from roofs, blowing in windows, and damaging buildings including Orpheum Theatre Krafts Dry Goods Store and the Kodiak Public School. Power outages affected the area as EEA crews worked to restore service.

Alvin Cohen, eldest of six, left his fire‑struck home October 3 to attend Wrangell Institute. He joins four siblings at the Baptist Mission while younger ones stay with relatives or are hospitalized. More than $750 donated to cover clothing food and transport, with funds reserved for medical needs.

Two Kodiak Oldtimers Die After Operations Outside
Funeral services were held in Omak Washington for Chris Carl Mattsen 64 Kodiak resident who died December 31 after a 23 day hospitalization following two operations ending with left leg amputation. He was born in Norway and came to Kodiak in the early 1920s a fisherman and carpenter survived by wife Katy Danielson and brother Nels. Also noted is Peter Magnusen 76 Kodiak resident who died December 27 in a Seattle hospital after a serious operation and burial in Seattle. He came to Alaska in 1905 and Kodiak in the 1910s worked as fisherman and carpenter later with Whiz Fish Products. He is survived by wife Esther a brother Ernest and a nephew in Bremerton. Doug Coolidge sang at Magnusen funeral. Magnusen buried in Seattle Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs Magnusen plans to return to Kodiak later in the year to handle Mill Bay property staying at the Apex Hotel Seattle.
