Wife secures sole ownership of Kodiak Variety Store

Mrs L F Wachtweih becomes sole owner through purchase of her husband’s interests in the Kodiak Variety Store. Located on the entire downstairs of the Felder building the store ranks among Kodiak’s three largest outlets. The couple opened the store on September 13 1941 and expanded space a month later by taking the remainder of the floor. The sale closed before Mr Nachtweih left for the United States on an indefinite visit.

Ex-Mayor Returns Home After Army Service

Ex mayor Nick Miell, who resigned Kodiak post to join the Army, flew home by plane yesterday after discharge at Fort Richardson. He served at Whitier Galena and Adak. Mrs Meill is the local fourth grade teacher.

Ex-Serviceman Daniel Craker Dies in Kodiak

Daniel Craker age 22 died at Griffin Memorial hospital on December 21 from self inflicted overdose of sleeping pills. He left a letter to his mother in Kelso Washington and is survived by three sisters. A recent Kodiak arrival and former U S Marine he recently worked for Army Transport Service in the Aleutians. Funeral services by Walter Muller will be held Monday at the Catholic church with local cemetery interment. Six servicemen friends will serve as pallbearers.

Knute Thevik fell on Saturday December 22 and sustained a hip injury.

Workers Arrive at Local Base From Seward and Inland Cities

Fifty eight men were hired for civilian jobs at the base arriving by boat Monday from Seward. Tom Stiles, civilian personnel director, previously traveled to Anchorage and Fairbanks to assist in securing the new employees.

The National Clothing collection begins Monday and runs through January. Drive chairman Harry Holt reports mayor O A Torgerson has proclaimed the event. Russian Orthodox Christmas Services Next Week

The Very Rev Gregory Gleboff announced a series of Russian Orthodox Christmas services starting Saturday with daily rites for five days. Schedule includes 7 pm Saturday 9 am and 8 pm Sunday 9 am 4 pm 9 am 9 am through Tuesday and Wednesday. A Russian New Year benefit dance is planned January 14 by the Russian Ladies Club.

Plates On Hand Arrive In Kodiak Under New Territory Rules

Plates for territorial vehicle licenses reached Kodiak this week and will be issued by the city clerk under a new territorial arrangement. Lt Gen Laughton Collins, War Department information chief, says demobilization will slow and some troops may be delayed due to replacement shortages. In no case will a service member wait more than three months past eligibility for discharge.

Rotary Christmas pageant at Orpheum shines with student artistry

The Rotary sponsored Christmas program on Christmas Eve at the Orpheum drew capacity crowds for two shows. Local students performed Nativity tableaux under Miss Betty Carter’s direction, with candy bags crafted from many cellophane bags and Santa Claus offering gifts. Superintendent Harry Holt coordinated school participation. Rotary committee members were Max Folsom, Charles Madsen, and Walter Sipprell.
