The Holy Orthodox Church marks Christmas on January 7 under the Julian calendar. Fasting and repentance precede the feast, with Christmas Eve traditions and a liturgical procession, gospel reverence, holy oil anointing, and distribution of holy bread and wine. (Continued on Page 4)
No baby born on January 1 1963 at Griffin Memorial hospital so Mr and Mrs Nick Berestoff claim the first baby of the year a girl Diana Shirley weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces. On January 3 Walter Samuel son of Mr and Mrs Walter Nestle born weighing 8 pounds 14 ounces. Also January 3 Wilbur H Montgomery and wife welcome a daughter Samantha Alice weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces.
Knudsen's now sells the 1963 Alaska hunting and fishing licenses as announced by owner Emil Knudsen. The sale at Knudsen's counts on local sportsmen to secure permits for the upcoming season.
Rotarians at the Mecca heard Alf Madsen, a Kodiak hunter and guide, present a slide show of the Kodiak Island area and the Valley of 10,008 Smokes. Guest speaker was Rev. Don Bullock of St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church.
Edward J. Kratcho known as Commissar and manager of the Kodiak Elks Club was summoned to Binghamp ton New York by the death of his sister on New Years Day. He departed on Wednesday evening's flight.
An Open Installation will be held on Saturday evening January 5 at 8 o clock in the Masonic Temple. All Masons, Eastern Stars and their guests are cordially invited.
The combined City Council and School Board postponed their discussion of a proposed 1 percent mill levy increase for next year due to lack of a quorum. They plan to reconvene next Thursday, January 10, at city hall to finalize the plan at the regular semi city council meeting.
About 75 chickens were roasted in a coop fire at the C. R. West residence on Mission Road. Kodiak Volunteers fought sub-freezing weather at 8:45 p.m. Only five chickens were saved and three pigs escaped alive as the blaze burned the coop near the city dump.
Welborn Construction Co. of Kodiak was the low bidder for rehabilitation work at West Scullery Building 3 on the base. The bid totaled 11,915 dollars with three other bids entered. Work is to be completed this spring and Welborn expects to start as soon as materials are received.
Alaska Packers reports normal operations and workers back from holidays as cold weather keeps boats in harbor. East Point’s Jim Major says equipment assembly continues and a shrimp operation could begin within two weeks. A Pacific Fisherman photo hints at possible use of the 166-foot tuna seiner Hornet for crab and salmon fisheries, with local photographer Tom Sugar noted for his lab’s photos.
A major Christmas Day fire at the FAA Woody Island dock caused about 50 percent damage, estimated at fifty thousand dollars. The blaze started around 10:20 a.m. after a two inch gasoline line on the 265 foot dock exploded. Fire crews and Navy vessels helped save the dock approach and loading zone. temporary repairs allow limited use and rebuilding is planned for spring. Names and crews involved include Art Brooks, John Katelnikoff and Leading Lady, plus Baptist Mission and navy personnel.
Orville Le Roy Spinharney 47 died after brief illness at Griffin Memorial Hospital. Funeral held Thursday at 2 pm officiated by Rev. Lewis White at Community Baptist Church. Born Shamrock Oklahoma he worked 17 years as a base plumber before retiring. Survivors include wife Merril a daughter Norene two sons Roger and Leroy a brother Walter Spinharney Montesano Wa and father H L Spinharney Bristow Okla. Burial Montesano Cemetery. Kodiak Mortuary arranged.
A series of local contributions from Kodiak High School Student Council and Pacific Northern Airlines plus the American Legion Post at Adak boosted the Bennie Benson Fund this week. A separate $2,000 check was sent to Virginia Mason Hospital Seattle for a $3,300 bill while physician fees totaled $1,100.
