Christmas Rites Scheduled at New Russian Church

Mission Ark Launched: Evangel Boat Becomes Floating Chapel
The Evangel, a 38 foot boat sponsored by the Women’s American Baptist Home Mission Society, was launched by Rev. Glen Chandler to travel Kodiak Island. Tom Williams largely built it. Ben Rice slipped into icy water but was unharmed. The Evangel will hold 20 to 30 people, show sound movies, and carry clothing as a relief ship on a planned spring schedule. Mrs. Chandler will accompany the mission.

John Thorsteinson Dies in Seattle
Funeral services were held yesterday in Seattle for John Thorsteinson former bartender at the Mecca who went outside two months ago. He died in a Seattle hospital Monday after a short illness. Thorsteinson 32 was born in Winnipeg and later lived in Seattle before coming to Alaska mine years ago.

Tender Spencer Runs Aground Off Kanatak In Severe Storm
The cannery tender Spencer owned by Carlson brothers of Chignik ran onto rocks near Kanatak while en route to Kodiak Thursday night. Coast Guard Kodiak station reported the vessel breaking up and possibly lasting until midnight. Clover and navy tug Matac were sent to assist though high winds 60 to 80 knots 20 foot seas and icy conditions hindered rescue planes. Crew numbers and identities are unknown.
