The Kodiak Electric Association announces its annual meeting on March 3 at the Kodiak Community Center. Main business is electing nine directors to the board.
A chimney at the Polar Bear cafe burned out during high winds at 2 30 am last Saturday. Sparks showered from the pipe and set fire to nearby wood outside. A chef grabbed a fire extinguisher but it was empty. occupants extinguished the blaze with water before it reached the woodwork. No alarm was sounded.
New York and Virginia faced heavy snowfall with at least three dead. The blizzard snarled traffic and slowed business as depths reached up to 19 inches in Lee County Virginia and 12 inches in parts of New York.
Jack Realey won the Community Center cribbage championship for the third straight year, defeating 13 other players. He finished 7 of 8 games to defend his crown, with P J Kerrigan, Pete Hjelmeir and F A Healey tied for second at 5-3. Mrs Pete Magnusen handed Realey a rare loss by two holes in round seven.
The grade school division of the Why You Should Support the Community Center essay contest was graded this week by Eva Nave, Walter Siprel and William Lamme after a school closing delay. First prize is $10 to Ruby Larson, 7th grade. second prize $5 to Stella Scroggs, 6th grade. third honorable mention Irene Simeonoff, 4th grade.
The American Legion Post 17 applied for a club liquor license to operate in the Mecca bar rear lounge but the council rejected new retail liquor issuance under current ordinances and will notify the district court. A proposed amendment to allow veterans groups liquor licenses was discussed with next readings planned. The Legion reportedly drafted a five year operation contract with Jake Foley as club steward, following the VFW’s start earlier this year outside city limits.
A broken fire siren atop Bert's drug store explains why it was not used at noon for the past week. The issue was noted by city maintenance crews and is under repair.
After nine months of seven day operation the Kodiak Community Center will close for one week starting March 3 for a brand new hemlock floor to be installed. The old floor wore out from over 40 000 user feet since opening last June. Funds came from a 2750 Navy gift with the Denali handling delivery. Owen and Sutliff donate their installation as part of a fundraising campaign.
The Kodiak Community Center fund drive reported 2 pm totals of 5835.00 with pledges still expected from a few precincts. Contributions ranged from fifty cents to 200 dollars as volunteers, weathering storm and flood, solicited from residents and business houses for operation in 1947.
The Bank of Kodiak and the post office will be closed today in honor of Washingtons birth day. Airmail service may be distributed if planes operate. Mrs Gertrude Blankenbug and her daughter departed on the Denal bound for Bose Idaho, her former home.
A five year old girl Sharon McElwain was rescued from an ice floe drifting in St Paul harbor after a boy allegedly shoved it loose. Mayor Lee Bettinger waded through several feet of water to bring her to shore. The incident occurred Wednesday amid drifting ice and tides.
In Kodiak during a cold spell crews used a steam thawer to thaw ice blocked water mains. Water reached the Community Center GM hospital Logan downtown and nearby fire hydrants with only two hydrants remaining unfrozen. A break was found on Alaska Way in front of Town Club as steam from a boiler on skids fed the mains. A thawing mishap caused a torrent of water near Mill Bay, Alaska Way, the Orpheum, and Harbor Avenue, flooding a bank basement.
Al Miller of the Victory cafe with his father Fred Miller and brother Rocky Miller won a contract to operate the base civilian cafeteria and restaurant, set to begin March 1 after iL. M. Markham’s tenure since opening ends. The Victory cafe, a major Koaiak restaurant and local club meeting spot, has been put up for sale.
Archibald Scotty Brunton a cannery watchman and theatre operator in Karluk visited Kodiak this week to apply for a marriage license with Marc Jackinsky Larsen's Bay teacher. The couple will wed on return home with Bob von Scheele officiating. Brunton has lived at Larsen's Bay over 20 years and plans two new theatres including one at Ouzinkie if a building can be found.
The U S Commissioner's office seeks information on Seth Foregren and George A Carlson last known to be in Kodiak in 1939. Anyone with knowledge of their present whereabouts is asked to contact the office on an important matter.
Near capacity crowd enjoyed the Community Center songfest on Wednesday evening. Mrs Charles E. Suths performed vocal solos with cont alto, as Dr A Holmes Johnson led the singing and Miss Beverly Gunnison accompanied at the piano.
Named chief Henry Gonzales, who has been acting chief since Belmont McCormick resigned, was named police chief retroactive to February at Monday’s council meeting. Walter Boyd, formerly employed at the bar, is a new night patrolman on probation.
