Two large crates of clothes are ready to be sent to Seattle from the Baptist Women's Society for distribution to needy persons in Europe. The drive was the second sponsored by the group. New officers will be elected at the March 11 meeting with Mrs Nelson Chamberlain chairing the nominating committee. A white elephant auction will be the program and non members are invited. Bill Would Raise City Tax Mills In Congress Move
Delegate Bob Bartlett introduces a bill to boost city taxing power to 30 mills, up from the 20-mill limit under the Organic Act. Kodiak Basketball Team Sends Off For Fee Rendezvous
The Kodiak high school basketball team left for Machorage to compete in the Fee Rendezvous for the Western Alaskan championship after an early dismissal. Taxis provided by the Teamsters Union carried 12 players and supporters to the base, a snow plow damaged a parked B and M and a Chrysler, snow squalls halted a plane, but Coach Tom Utterback’s squad still traveled to Palmer for a pre-tournament game and will play Tue through Fri with Jim Hamilton recovering from illness.

Deed Bill Approved for Alaska Natives Land Trusts

KEA Meet On March 1 At Community Center

Carlson Discharged From Hospital After Spencer Wreck. Axel Carlson skipper of the Spencer was discharged yesterday and remains at the Kodiak Hotel. Plans for his wedding to Alva Skonberg are still indefinite but forthcoming. Other Spencer survivors still hospitalized have enjoyed taxi rides and an Orpheum movie courtesy of local cab drivers and theater officials.

Hanging Date Set For Murderer Nelson in Alaska
Austin Nelson, briefly in Kodiak in 1945, will hang on March 1 in Juneau for the murder of Jim Ellen, a groceryman in the Territorial capital. Nelson was convicted ten months ago and had been slated to die July 1, 1947, but his execution was stayed pending the trial of another man also convicted on the same charge.
