Statehood Step Nearer for Alaska Admission

A House subcommittee recommended Alaska be admitted as a state after hearings in Kodiak and other cities. The report notes Alaska would gain two senators one representative and federal highway act benefits, with revised judiciary and police systems and jurisdiction over fisheries.

Jensen Liquor Store Displays Daughter in For Sale Note

Martin Jensen advertised unusual merchandise yesterday in his liquor store. A blanket with Rose Marie Jensen seated center window carried a for sale note. Jensen set his asking price at 7.50 dollars but rejected all offers.

Kodiak Clothing Going To Europe

Two large crates of clothes are ready to be sent to Seattle from the Baptist Women's Society for distribution to needy persons in Europe. The drive was the second sponsored by the group. New officers will be elected at the March 11 meeting with Mrs Nelson Chamberlain chairing the nominating committee. A white elephant auction will be the program and non members are invited. The World Day of Prayer service was led by Mrs Rowland N Wilkingon at the church.

Bill Would Raise City Tax Mills In Congress Move

Delegate Bob Bartlett introduces a bill to boost city taxing power to 30 mills, up from the 20-mill limit under the Organic Act. The measure also lets the territory set a 10-mill levy on all property outside city limits, a power not currently used. If enacted, tax increases would be council decisions rather than mandatory.

Kodiak Basketball Team Sends Off For Fee Rendezvous

The Kodiak high school basketball team left for Machorage to compete in the Fee Rendezvous for the Western Alaskan championship after an early dismissal. Taxis provided by the Teamsters Union carried 12 players and supporters to the base, a snow plow damaged a parked B and M and a Chrysler, snow squalls halted a plane, but Coach Tom Utterback’s squad still traveled to Palmer for a pre-tournament game and will play Tue through Fri with Jim Hamilton recovering from illness.

Deed Bill Approved for Alaska Natives Land Trusts

Congress approved H.R. 3503 allowing unrestricted deeds to Alaska natives claiming townsite tracts. Deed lands may be sold or taxed after issuance but cannot satisfy federal preexisting debts. Anchorage attorney Nesbett says the bill is inadequate. City attorney Smith agrees stronger action is needed.

KEA Meet On March 1 At Community Center

The Kouiak Electric Association will hold its annual meeting at the Community Center on Monday evening March 1. At least 50 members must be present to transact business and elect new directors. Members with a valid membership certificate can vote, proxies must be written and dated, and a single member may vote up to three proxies. Ted Rozak, KBA manager, urges strong turnout.

Carlson Discharged From Hospital After Spencer Wreck. Axel Carlson skipper of the Spencer was discharged yesterday and remains at the Kodiak Hotel. Plans for his wedding to Alva Skonberg are still indefinite but forthcoming. Other Spencer survivors still hospitalized have enjoyed taxi rides and an Orpheum movie courtesy of local cab drivers and theater officials.

Hanging Date Set For Murderer Nelson in Alaska

Austin Nelson, briefly in Kodiak in 1945, will hang on March 1 in Juneau for the murder of Jim Ellen, a groceryman in the Territorial capital. Nelson was convicted ten months ago and had been slated to die July 1, 1947, but his execution was stayed pending the trial of another man also convicted on the same charge.

Commissioner Sees Kodiak Forming Independent School District

Education Commissioner James Ryan offered aid to Kodiak in forming an independent school district. In a letter to League for Better Citizenship chair John Gibbons, Ryan said wealth outside city limits supports the move and enclosed Qs and As from a Juneau discussion. He invited further contact.

Jessie Holt of Kodiak prepares a 85 poem collection titled Shadow of Earth with 4 sections philosophy lyrical natural and Alaskan. Paul Bond provides 4 full page illustrations and the work may be sent to New York publishers for acceptance. Her poem The Sea Wife won first prize at the Midwestern Writers Conference in Chicago and was set to music.
