Garland Hit By Blizzard
The S. S. Garland, en route from Kodiak to Seward, faced a winter gale about 250 miles from Kodiak in Pavlov Bay. A 50 mph wind with gusts to 60, temperatures below zero, and a foot of ice on decks and lifeboats endangered the voyage. Captain John M. Pym reported rough conditions before the crew chopped away ice, then reached port to discharge Kodiak King Crab and proceed to Seward.

Nightengale Faces Disorderly Charge After Bar Disturbance
Police answered a disturbance call at Idle Hour Bar on Sunday February 14. Harry Nightengale was arrested by Patrolman Argy for drunk and disorderly conduct. In City Magistrate Court on Monday he was found guilty after pleading not guilty and given a fifteen day sentence suspended. Witnesses Tom Cramford and Andy Pelto testified.

Coast Guard Sets Fire Extinguisher Rules for Boats
Coast Guard district commander Capt W W Kinner announced new regulations requiring motorboats to carry portable fire extinguishers. Boats under 26 feet open construction with outboard motors and not carrying hire passengers are exempt. The rule, published in the Federal Register on Sept 9, 1953, takes effect Jan 18, 1954 and aligns with Table 25.30-20 requiring under 25 feet one extinguisher and 26 to 40 feet two extinguishers.

Unger Held On Morals Charge In Anchorage Case
Rodney C. Unger was held to answer to the grand jury on a white slavery charge after a preliminary hearing in Anchorage's U S Commissioner’s court. He is jailed in federal custody in lieu of 10,000 dollars bail. The accused allegedly transported a woman from New York City to Kenai for prostitution in July 1953, with prior detention at the Kodiak federal jail before removal to Anchorage.

J B Holland Dies In USA
John B. Holland died at Swedish Hospital Seattle at 11 pm Sunday February 14 after years of illness. Born January 29 1892 in Skudegneshavn Norway he emigrated to the United States and lived in Minneapolis before moving to Seattle. He left Norway relatives and had three sons Vernon John Jr Eugene all in Alaska and several days later, Lawrence in Seattle.
