City Manager Bill Poland told the City Council that a recently purchased portable road paving plant with a hot mix batch plant and paving machine may ship by April 15. The unit, not new but in excellent condition, could lay 15-20 tons per hour and city work this summer may involve about three blocks.
Ray Martin announces a Corvair Monza coupe as the Festival Queen contest prize for Kodiak King Crab Festival May 5 to 7. Contestants sell tickets at 1 each. drawing on the final night. Queen earns 500, runners up 100, and 100 prize to seller of winning ticket. Frank Irick handling February details at Sportland while chairman is away.
U S Corps of Engineers engineer Jiggs Tice from Anchorage established pier head and bulkhead lines along Kodiak coast to protect navigable waters. City would gain permitting authority after adoption, with changes discussed by City Manager Poland. Gale Gronwald joined Council on flood control study linking to small boat harbor ice problems and Willow street drainage.
The Kodiak Area Chamber supports the city hire of a planner with a $12,000 total outlay, half funded by the Federal government, to guide future improvements in stages. It also backs Matunuska Chamber’s plan to relocate Alaska’s capital, proposing a governor-appointed committee and a statewide vote on sites not near Anchorage or Fairbanks, with government move by June 1, 1968. The group endorsed Rep. Pete Deveau for North Pacific Fisheries Commission and noted public land lots to be released March 15 plus a Juneau hearing on ferry legislation. Airport dedication luncheons and festival plans proceed.
Sixteen Kodiak men joined Co. D 3rd Battalion 297th Infantry Alaska National Guard during the past week. Four will depart later in February for six months active duty at Fort Ord California then return to Kodiak for drills. Names include Ronald C. Strope Floyd D. McClarknon Ervin R. McNeil Terry G. Gothe Emil Ambrosia Jr and others previously enlisted.
Juneau Alaska reports lawmakers are only three of 195 introduced bills through the 1961 session with a 60 day target. House Speaker Taylor warned the chamber to push bills from committees or fall behind. Seven pay cut and per diem reduction bills sit in both chambers and three public hearings are set this week on local government borough bills, a ferry bond proposal, and a February 18 minimum wage increase to 1.75.
A bipartisan Senate bill in Juneau proposes a 10 percent rebate of the raw fish tax for a salmon cannery that employs at least 80 percent Alaska residents among its working crews under contract. Introduced by Senators Owen Engstrom McNabb Hopson and Wiese with Democrats and Republicans backing the measure.
A resolution in the Senate by Al Owen and Bob Logan asks the Department of Public Works to construct small boat harbors at Sand Point and King Cove, Juneau.
