Candidates Enter Territorial Races With Many Familiar Names

The slate for the Alaska territorial legislature races is set for April primaries. Noted Kodiak entrants include City Attorney Russ Arnett and Dr Milo Fritz. Republicans field many Anchorage candidates while Democrats list B J Logan and Mike Gravel among others. Senatorial candidates span from Palmer to Cordova with Alaska Party and independents also present.

Faith Leader Florence Mayberry to Speak in Kodiak

Mrs. Florence Mayberry of the American Hands of the Ptha's World Faith arrives in Kodiak February 11 for an Alaska tour. She will present slides from Europe and the Holy Land, speak on Baha i Faith, and discuss themes of One World and World Peace at the Guhrke residence with local civic groups and women's clubs.

USO Official Tours Alaska Discusses 1958 Funding

USO Assistant Director of Operations E Tyree Greene from New York visited Kodiak USO after attending the local Operating Committee meeting. He outlined the 1958 budget, noting funding similar to 1957, affecting programs and possible USO closures in some towns. He announced new USO Entertainment Units, including one in Alaska.

No Assessor This Year Economy Move Cuts Tax Work

City Manager Bill Poland will skip hiring a tax assessor this year and use City Hall clerical staff for the assessment process. Field work will be handled by City Clerk Treasurer Doug Preston and the City Manager, alternately as time allows. The change aims to save about $1,800 to $2,000 for taxpayers. Tax returns should include full information as questionable filings will be checked. Automobiles must be listed and the Jan 1 value date follows recent Territorial legislation. Military personnel outside Alaska with no business property may file a property tax exemption affidavit at City Hall. City Hall hours are 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday–Thursday, and 8 A.M. to 8 P.M. Friday.

Loop Road Survey To Commence Soon

The proposed loop road survey will connect Kodiak Mon ashka Bay Ouzinkie and Larsens Bay. Federal Aid funds are programmed for the Antone Larsen Bay Ouzinkie Road survey, administered by the Bureau of Public Roads with Alaska Highway and Public Works Department involvement. Construction hinges on survey completion design and estimates. timing not advised.

Deer Hunting Statistics in Kodiak Reveals 197 Deer Killed

Fish and Wildlife Service reports 197 deer harvested in Kodiak after surveying 132 randomly mailed hunter questionnaires with 116 returns. Averages include 48 hunting days per hunter and 120.2 pound field dressed deer. 55 percent fell in November and 30 percent in the season's final two weeks.

Waterfront Crab Contract Signed Amid Fishing Push

Crab workers union officials and King Crab Inc signed a multi month negotiated contract. Cannery and crab fishermen agreed to a half cent loss per pound while maintaining steady production. About 14 boats supply the cannery with 5000 crabs processed daily. A hopeful island tour and dental outreach are planned with Dr Paul Jaeger offering free exams. Fishing season dates were set by the International Pacific Halibut Commission with area based opening and catch limits.
