Longshore Rates Increase Amid Agreement Changes

U S Marshal Handcuffs Prisoner to Door Over Diet

A U S Marshal, Paul Herring, handcuffed his housekeeper Mrs Rachel Gibson to a door after a breakfast dispute about dieting. He demanded two pieces of toast while she served only grapefruit juice. The marshal said he wanted toast and remained at the door until he finished two slices, after which he left. The article notes that Mrs Gibson could not be quoted.

New Restrictions Placed On Liquor

Civil Defense ordinance now prohibits giving selling or procuring liquor for soldiers during restricted hours under penalty. Taxi drivers face license revocation on conviction. Liquor sales to enlisted men in uniform banned 4 30 p m to 8 45 p m. Vehicles may operate till 10 30 p m with lights shielded.

Mrs Walkoff Dies of Tuberculosis at 24

Mrs Nickolas Walkoff aged 24 died February 3 from pulmonary tuberculosis. She was survived by her husband three children and her mother Mrs William Nikrasoff. Funeral services were held at the Greek Russian Orthodox church.

Budget Allotment For 1943 Less For Territory

The Roosevel t 1943 budget to Congress requests 1 502 660 for Alaska government, down from 1 626 965 this year. Alaska Railroad asked at 4 750 000. Includes 708 000 for roads trails bridges 300 000 for Palmer Richardson Highway and 50 000 for public schools. Additional items cover care of insane 209 080 native medical relief 553 180 and reindeer service 95 870. No funding for Alaska International Highway Commission, but 4 000 remains for the group.
