Pass Ordinance For Bond Issue
The City will issue bonds for the purchase and improvement of the City Hall after passage of Ordinance No. 222 at Monday's council meeting. Voters approved the bond issuance at a special election held February 19, 1957, in an amount not to exceed $50,000. The bonds will be issued later in the year and soon printed.
Council Opposes Assessor's Fee
George Cornelius proposed a fixed 1800 dollar fee to assess city property after a council discussion. He outlined the labor of inspecting houses for accurate valuation and the extensive bookwork. Councilman Berg pressed for clarification on why the cost remained high compared with last year. Cornelius cited legislative changes requiring full 100 percent valuation increasing computation and assessment work.

National VFW Week Observed Here
National VFW Week ending January 25 was celebrated locally by Katmai Post 7056 and the Ladies Auxiliary. George Sonntag directed the community service program with religious activities and hospital visits by Cooties and OCootiettes. Post Commander Phillip Dinglasa praised participation and noted nine new or reinstated members, closing with an Open House at the Post Hall. A schedule of February events followed, including meetings, church services, hospital visitation, and a Valentine party.

Boy Scouts To Administer Affairs Of City
City officials will be replaced for an afternoon on February 8 when Boy Scouts take over administrative duties. The Council approved the plan and Scouts chosen for civic roles will be hosted at lunch before assuming office. The Mayor, City Manager, City Clerk, Utilities Superintendent, Fire Chief and Wharfinger will be filled by Scouts for the afternoon.

Workers Reject Piece Work Idea At Kodiak Cannery Meeting
United Cannery Workers of Kodiak Island voted down a plan to pay packers blowers and gillers on a piece work basis while others stay at 2.20 per hour. The secret ballot rejected the proposal after lengthy discussion among 46 workers at United Fishermen's Hall. A contract between the union and King Crab Inc. was drawn up and ratified, preserving the 2.20 dollar minimum wage for all cannery labor. The session closed with a shrimp harvesting and processing film by Kim Clark.
