Christmas Eve Rotary Program At Orpheum Theatre

The Rotary club sponsors the big community Christmas program on Tuesday December 24 at the Orpheum theatre. Admission is free with no reserved seats. The 6 pm first show is for children with Santa Claus giving each child a bag of candy and fruit, followed by an 8 pm show for adults. The program features community singing recitations by Jane Magnusen and Linda Koch folk dances a Christmas tableau and a children's chorus. Dancers include Alma Nelson Vivian Pagano Thelma Cobb Martha Olsen Marie Cope Sallie Heitman Nancy Norman Geneva Owen Hazel Marie Owen Isabel Nelson Sheila Brillon. Singers include Marilyn Chamberlain Gladys Pageno Bea Malutin Ione Norton Cherie Morrison Lorraine Magnusen Beth Kizer. All school grades participate. Miss Keck and Miss Kramer supervise the school portion.

Two Ships Due Soon From Alaska Ports

The Lama which sailed Wednesday is due about December 26 at Kodiak per the local Alaska Steamship office. The Reef Knot, relief ship from Portland, sailed Tuesday and will arrive around month’s end via Seward and Seldevia.

Store Robbed On Second Try In Weekend Heist

Over the weekend two break in attempts targeted O Kraft & Sen store. The second entry succeeded stealing $15 in veterans tax money from a cigar box and about $9 from the women department till. A broken second story window appeared first but entry did not occur. A second window was broken Sunday night and the rear door left open at 8:50 pm. A footprint in the snow vanished with fresh snowfall. Also listed are Kodiak residents summoned for petit jury duty in Anchorage on December 30, including Jim Angell and others.

Okeh Jail Site Twice Approved In Second Special Election

Voters approved granting city hall property to the federal government for a jail, this time a larger 100 by 78.5 foot lot. Total votes were 72 yes to 6 no, versus 81 to 5 in August. Deputy U S Marshal Paul Herring said plans are moving to Kodiak for a $140000 structure likely to be finished by next summer. Election officials included Oscar Nelson, Mrs Pete Magnusen, H M Couley, Zenita Oxford, and Janet Saundes.

Taxi operator sues to recover 2200 in Anchor district court

Jake La Follette, a taxi operator, sues John Chase and Jay Tolbert in Anchor district court for 2200. His taxi, driven by Norman Spencer, was damaged on Oct 24 at the base when it rear-ended a Navy truck that had collided head on with a tractor operated by Chase. Damages sought include 1200 for the crash month and 1000 for the month the vehicle was not in operation. School closed with room programs at 2:30 yesterday and will reopen Monday, Dec 30.

Annual New Year’s Eve Ball at Blinn’s Hall Annex

The annual New Year’s Eve ball will be held at Blinn’s hall with the Community Center serving as an annex for overflow and dancing on both floors. The 4 Hits and a Miss will provide music, tickets available in advance or at the box office, and Kodiak’s Volunteer Fire Department sponsors the event as its main fundraiser. Bonnie McPeak, a fourth grade teacher, left for Longview, Texas, due to her mother’s illness. Mrs. Henry Neseth will fill in.

Plane Damaged During Landing At Base From Anchorage Flight

A Pacific Northern Airlines DC 3 arriving from Anchorage damaged on landing at the base. The under shot gear struck the wing, one tire blew, and the plane skidded about 206 feet. No injuries. Gasoline spilled, propellers bent. Passengers included W G Ellia, Mildred Huff, and J M Wanthew. Pilot Tony Gomez, co pilot Dick Chamberlain, stewardess Gladys Newell. Repairs expected two weeks, schedule unchanged.

School Seals Drive Tops $210 With Fifth Grader Leading

School children raised 210.67 dollars in Christmas Seals sales led by Mrs George Keelings fifth grader who contributed 55 dollars to the effort.

Buses Return to Service After Driver Union Deal

Buses of the Tagura transit system resumed operation this week after a driver-union dispute. John Kibler, new manager from Bremerton, plans to buy the buses from the company where P. J Watkinson acts as agent. An agreement with the drivers union was reached before service restarted, with a fall schedule expected by next week.
