Bears Host Anchorage Kodiak Basketball Games

Tickets go fast for two games Monday and Tuesday evenings December 2 and 30 between the Kodiak Bears and visiting Anchorage. Reserved seats 2.50 dollars, general admission 1.00, with 75 seats reserved per night on the stage. Season ticket holders may buy half price. Joe Floyd urges early purchase to meet a 400 dollar guarantee.

Christmas Trees Help Scout Fund in Kodiak Drive

Boy Scout Troop No. 625 boosted its cash to buy Christmas trees for Mediak residents. Trees will be available until supplies run out. Thanks go to Alaska Transfer Donnelley Acheson City of Kodiak White Alice USC Thorsheim's Sutliff Son Al Fenner for support and donations. Scouts will assist selections each evening until 7 30 p m.

Chiropractor Dr D M Finley visits Kodiak for ten days

Minneapolis chiropractor Dr D M Finley arrived in Kodiak on Thursday and will remain ten days. He can be consulted at the Kodiak hotel during his stay. Finley has traveled to several southeastern cities and towns and plans to visit Fairbanks after leaving Kodiak.

Fire put out at Mission Road home by Kodiak department

A fire started in the old Leite residence on Mission Road Thursday night and was quickly extinguished by the Kodiak Fire Department. No injuries reported and the cause is under investigation.

Christmas Party This Morning

The Rotary club hosts a Christmas party for area children at 10 a.m. today at the Orpheum theatre and USO club. Santa will appear with free stockings for children four and under with parents at the USO, while the Orpheum offers movies alongside Santa. All community children are invited.

BPW Christmas Party Draws Painting Prize and Pot Luck

Business and Professional Women's Club members enjoyed a Christmas dinner at Mrs Justine Hinkel's home on December 15. Dorothy Clark won a Jeanne Laurance painting in a drawing. Party chairs were Lillian Smith and Maxine Brooks. Next meeting January 15 at Mrs Ellen Dawson's home with co-hostesses Carolyn Floyd Lillian Lamme and Estelle Marlin.

No Extra Flights After Tomorrow

There will be two flights tomorrow to complete the extra flights added during the Christmas rush by PNA, as stated by the local office. No afternoon flights are scheduled on December 24, 26, and 31, and no flights on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. No reduction on Alaska fares any longer.

Christmas Trees Airlifted to Island Villages

Airplanes from Kodiak Airways airlifted evergreen trees to island villages Alitak Old Harbor Karluk Moser Bay and others where trees do not grow. Bill Stone superintendent of the Kodiak Baptist mission and mission boys cut and bundle two to four trees for Friday drops. The annual gift brings symbolic Christmas trees to treeless areas beyond Ugak Bay into the Aleuts.

The Public Library will be closed December 24 25 31 and January 1.

The Kodiak Mirror announces a Christmas edition to be published on Wednesday December 24. The issue goes on sale at 2 PM, with ads due by noon Monday and news items by 10 AM Wednesday. The Christmas issue is the year’s final edition, resuming January 10.

Hughes Names Rivers Office Aide In Alaska Delegate

Charles W. Hughes is named administrative assistant to U.S. Representative Ralph J. Rivers of Alaska. He leaves for Washington December 26 and will start duties on arrival, handling research and publicity. Congress convenes January 3. Plans Completed For Turkey Shoot At Ft Abercrombie

Final plans for a turkey shoot by the Outdoorsmen at Ft Abercrombie tomorrow. Open to all ages and genders, five-shot targets cost $1.00. Shooters compete in groups of 10 with a turkey awarded per group, two turkeys max per contestant. Rifles are .22 caliber with iron sights at 75 yards. Hours 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rain or shine as range is sheltered. Free coffee for attendees.

Shirley Phelps and her daughter Shayna arrived in Kodiak from San Diego. She is the daughter of Bill Damery and will spend the holidays with the Damery family. Phelps formerly worked at the Naval Station in the District Public Works office.

Propose Payments If Bristol Bay Fishery Closed

Alaska Senator elect Al Owen urged government payments to idle Bristol Bay fishermen if red salmon fishing stops, calling it payment in lieu of production. Bristol Bay Fish Producers Association’s Denton Moore opposed full closure, warning of higher Japanese effort and defending fishermen’s rights. Cook Inlet Semeters Association urged a boycott of Japanese canned fish until Bristol Bay fishing ends, drawing strong audience support while canning interests stayed silent on fish traps.

Micro Aid For Native Fishermen In Alaska

Secretary of the Interior announces a Bureau of Indian Affairs program to help Alaska natives modernize fishing vessels. A lending program in Southeastern Alaska aids associations owning salmon canneries, with loans totaling 1.3 million dollars owed to the United States for boats and gear. Prior to 1958 most native boats were small and used in inside waters.

Free Variety Show At Naval Station Billiken Theatre

A Sunday afternoon program at Billiken Theatre features a concert band a 15 piece dance band and the chapel choir plus soloists. Free to civilians navy personnel and Kodiak residents. Chief Allan Bennett directs the band and Mrs James M Robertson directs the choir with Christmas theme variations.
