Council Votes On Cold Storage Offer Makes Counter Proposal to King Grab

Kodiak City Council in regular session prioritized a counter proposal to King Crab on buying the city cold storage plant for 60 000 dollars with 500 000 pounds capacity. Exemption from property taxes for ten years was dropped from the terms. If accepted, voters will decide later. City seeks planning input from Alaska Housing Authority and discusses ferry system impact on fish markets and beef shipping. Mayor Coon presided. all but Brechan attended.

Cardinal Spellman to Visit Alaska on December 19

His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman Archbishop of New York and Military Vicar for the U S Armed Forces will visit the Alaska command during the Christmas season arriving at 2 45 p m December 19 at the Naval Station and meeting the Commandant and staff He will visit patients at the Naval Hospital conduct a Pontifical Low Mass and greet the congregation before dining at the Civilian Club The trip continues with stops at Anchorage Kodiak Fairbanks and Galena and leads to Greenland on December 22.

Mobile X-Ray Unit Kodiak Airways Begins New Flight Plan

The Alaska Division of Health will run a free chest x-ray clinic in Kodiak from December 12 to 16. The mobile unit will be at Kodiak Health Center December 12 15 and at the National Guard Armory December 16 offering x-rays daily and extended hours. The service is open to all residents over two years old to help detect tuberculosis and other chest diseases early.

The film depicts Franklin D Roosevelt’s early life before his presidency with star Raph Bellamy portraying FDR and Greer Garson as Eleanor Roosevelt. Featuring Hume Cronyn as Louis Howe, the cast also includes portrayals of his family and friends amid a Technicolor screen adaptation by Bellamy.

Missing boys found near docks after Coast Guard aid

Thanks were extended to Ko diak Police the National Guard and Shore Patrol for locating two missing boys aged eight and twelve, sons of Mr and Mrs Hix. The youths were found under the docks near the D and A store.

Methodist Bishop Here December 23 visit to Kodiak

Bishop Gerald H. Kennedy, resident Bishop of the Methodist church in Los Angeles and head of the Methodist bishops council, will be an honored guest at Kodiak Naval Station December 23. He and Mrs. Kennedy accept an invite from Lt. General Frank Armstrong Jr. to visit servicemen and families in Alaska. He will tour Station Hospital, attend a Chapel dinner, and lead services before returning to Anchorage. This visit echoes his Alaska ties from a 1948 Portland tenure when Alaska church affairs fell under his office.

Unwilling Hunter Quietly Traps Two Deer With Cars

Mrs Juanita Gallahan a non hunter in King George Virginia unintentionally killed two deer while driving near her home to avoid them. One deer darted into her car causing damage and a second deer was struck on returning home in the damaged vehicle.

State Fish and Game Board Ends Fall Meeting with Proposals

The 1961 fall session extended to ten days and finalized commercial fishing rules for western Alaska. Kodiak moves to 1961 troll fishing and a June 1 to Sept 30 pink season with weekly July three day periods, set netting restricted to year residents, and beach gear limits. Several zones including Kodiak channel and parts of the Alaska Peninsula close to sport and subsistence fishing, with net spacing tightened and certain areas excluded from set nets.

Little League Receives Donation From Fleet Reserve

The Kodiak Little League Kitty gained 35.50 after a smoker held by the Fleet Reserve Association on August 10 boosted the League treasury. Curley Wilson, president, announced the donation and credited the association event.
