Pioneer Jesse Blinn Dies at 80 in Alaska

Jesse Blinn, 80, early Alaska pioneer who ran Kodiak dance hall and pool room and later mail service between Seldovia and Cook Inlet, died Tuesday at Au hospital. Born February 17, 1862 in Frankfort Indiana, he arrived in Alaska in 1887 aboard Amethyst to fish Karluk, later managed Northern Commercial on Woody Island and led a coin store precursor to O J & Son.

Man Recovers After Suicide Attempt At Hospital

City police report a man attempted death by his own hand at 11:00 a.m. Monday using poison and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. He recovered sufficiently to be released later in the week, with police noting distress over family care amid an expected induction into the military.

Shuravioff Funeral Services Held for Mrs Shuravi

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Tesian Greek Orthodox Church for Mrs Simeon Shuravi born January 10 1882 in Kodiak. Daughter of Jacob TriCarloff she married in 1900. Husband died in February 1927. Survived by daughters Mrs Mendell Mrs Helen Eck Mrs Morrison and sons Lionel and Miam all of this city. She lived in Cordova since 1904 and had suffered a paralytic stroke in January 1941 and another in September this year, and had lived with her daughter Mrs Morrison.

The drive was renewed this week with handbills urging residents to collect metal for the war effort. Taxi Driver Cleared In Thanksgiving Fire Assault Trial

A jury in U S Commissioner C C Naughton's court found Lester Page not guilty of assault and battery against Ray and Joe Sears after testimony surrounding a Thanksgiving fire at Helsel and Frosts. Page claimed braking to avoid a fire hose. Sears brothers testified they pulled him from the taxi and beat him. Jurors included Jack Lydick R Ardahl Herman Felder Henry Wolff Oscar Nelson Ole Olson.

Overdue Hunters Return After Six Weeks Missing

Mr and Mrs Bob Anderson of Kodiak and Dean Smith a base employee returned to town last night after six weeks overdue from a bear hunting trip that began October 3. Delayed by motor trouble and bad weather they were rescued near Piriden Bay by Laurenson of Bear Island and a second search boat led by Jon Rogers. Rogers was delayed by a wire snag near Ouzinkie but is expected back today. The party bagged three bears but left the skins behind.

F S Frazier of the Boy Scouts of America visits Kodiak to support the local troop led by A William Schara and sponsored by Community Baptist church. A Rotary fund drive led by Frank Hermann Forest Ayers and Rev Gregory Morony backs financing for Scout work in the Territory as the organization aids in 24 war effort projects for national defense.

Center Fund Drive Aims Red Cross Use of Legion Hall

A drive this week seeks to free the Kodiak Post American Legion hall from a 3500 obligation so the Red Cross can renovate it into a recreation center for service members. After the war the building will return to the Legion as a community center. Donors include Mrs Warren A Taylor and Mrs Forest G Ayers. over 1500 in pledges by local businessmen in week one.

Manhast Truck Driver Link To Fatal Ice Curve

Eddie McRoberts 27, an auto mechanic's helper, died after being crushed beneath a rear wheel on an icy sunlit curve while riding a snow deck truck en route to the mess hall. John Donnely drove the truck, with Robert F. Loud aboard. eyewitness Earl T. Johnson reported the decedent toppled beneath the wheel as he slipped. McRoberts died at 3:163 PM Sunday following a fractured skull.

Death Follows Fall Overboard Near Kodiak

Manuel Lopez about 50 died Sunday after falling overboard from an Army boat that had left Kodiak about 15 minutes earlier. Witnesses said a crew member jumped in to rescue him but he died on rescue. Officials report death by heart failure and immersion. He is survived by his mother in Blaine Washington.

Services Held for John Goodmensen 64

John Goodmensen, 64, died December 1 after a heart attack. A sailor and fisherman in the area for nine years, born in Norway and naturalized, he is survived by his brother Gustav of Kodiak and relatives in the United States. Interment was in the new cemetery.
