Canadian Cruise Vessel Arrives at Base Ahead of Labor Day

A Canadian cruiser with 700 officers and men, escorted by a destroyer, arrived at the base just before 3 pm yesterday on a training cruise. Vessels will remain through Labor Day. A cocktail party for officers and a dance for enlisted men were held last night, with a dance honoring officers planned for tonight.

Local Bear Names Draw Contest At Community Center

Seven year old Marcia Antoin-Folsom won the naming contest for two bear cubs on display at the Community center during a Masquerade dance. Six year old Lila Ruth Olsen earned a prize for suggesting Fuzsy-Wuzzy. The three bears were shipped to the Cleveland Zoo by Mr. n. The zoo will be informed of the names and contest papers.

Crab Plane to Fly Dungeness Crabs From Kodiak

A C-54 plane from American Air, Los Angeles, will pick up a load of dungeness crabs at Kodiak and fly them to Anchorage then to Los Angeles via Seattle. Arrangements are handled by L V Cast Inc of Anchorage. The Kodiak Cold Company cooks the crabs for shipment.

Salmon Derby Entrants Must Register For Big Prize Day

A Kodiak derby kicks off Sunday with four jackpot prizes for top fish in Chiniak Bay, Women's Bay, St. Paul Harbor and Kodiak channel. Entries require advance filing and a one dollar fee. no net snagging allowed. judges include Marcus Meyer and a committee of local officials. open to all, license not required for pleasure fishing.

Bullets Fly At Guard Gate On Shelikoff Highway

A Marine guard at the Shelikoff Highway gate faced two shots from a hill above about 3 am Wednesday. Police and base troops responded, exchanging fire with a shooter hiding in dense brush. The shooter fled as darkness fell. no building damage reported. The city granted a permit to move a shack from John R Malutin’s property to the Neville property outside the city limits.

Fishing contest setup at Erskine's dock Sunday morning

Norman's Photo Shop, Kodiak Mercantile, NOB Recreation Office and NOB Red Cross Recreation Center Derby headquarters will set up at Erskine's dock at 8 am Sunday. Fish caught after sunrise may be entered, no judging after 5 pm, no entries after 3 pm, prizes awarded immediately after judging.

Fifty one couples attended a masquerade at the Community Center Saturday.
